sad part is they could trade any one of those 7 dmen and no one would be angry about it.

actually think moving Gus would get the most backlash

- Crimsoninja

We haven't seen enough of Gustafsson to know what he's best at. But he's young, home grown, and he has mobility and seems to be decent at both ends. So I wouldn't be looking to trade him.

But yet Holmgren gets ripped and criticized for going after both players.
- MJL

I can't say I like all of Homer's moves, but going after those two was the right call. The funny thing is, a case could be made that we'd have been better off with Suter than Weber. Maybe Nashville kept the wrong guy.

I am surprised that there hasn't been a trade yet.. I was execting a reactionary trade. Also surprised how quiet the rumors have been... not that they mean anything, but things have been a little too quiet.
- mikel33

I'm not, not all. It's too early in the Season for other teams to be looking to make moves. You need a dance partner to make a deal. Still could happen in the near future, you never know.

I think he takes some heat for not landing them and then not having a plan b.
- Briere

There really is no plan B. There's what is available, and that's it.

Both are very good. But I like Weber better. I agree it was the right call. But he get's ripped for it.

If we had Weber patrolling the back end here.. I am sure most of our fans would be happy right now.

my point was that homer wasnt ripped (by anyone rational anyway) for going after them. he took heat for not getting the deals done.

i actually like homer and think hes done a good job, btw.

No doubt, but you obviously aren't going to get a player like that unless you try to when the player becomes available. And he's willing to take some risks to elevate the team. I like that and applaud the GM for it. I hope he continues to take the same approach when the opportunity arrives to add a game changer.

My personal thought is that he has done a good job, but his moves in recent years are harder to defend. In the start, he had the midas touch and did great.. Since the trade of Richards and Carter.. his moves have not worked out well, but it's not for lack of effort.. Bryz, Bob etc.. I still like the Pronger move. Could not have seen the injury coming. Swung big on Weber and Suter and struck out.

CBC article thoughts on the Flyers..

9. The word on Philadlephia Flyers forward Claude Giroux -- three points in eight games -- is he is trying to do way too much. You can see him forcing plays that aren't there, especially as the losses and injuries mount. One thing teams look for in their best players is, do they raise their game when things are going badly? He's trying yet not succeeding.

10. The first occupant of head coach Craig Berube's doghouse was Andrej Meszaros, who the Flyers have tried to trade. You can certainly understand why they would try to move him. But could he be more useful to them as an expiring contract? The Flyers are at $56 million US for next year, with both cap-relief buyouts already used. Letting him walk and opening a $4-million hole would help, although not for this season.

11. A few tweeters asked, "Now that it's public Chris Pronger won't play again, will the Flyers be able to use his contract as cap relief until it expires?" The answer is yes because he suffered a hockey-related injury. The NHL would only have issues if he was healthy enough to return, only to have the team refuse to re-instate him. It would be great to see him play, but the future Hall of Famer seems at peace. Philadelphia will get $5 million US of long-term injury relief through 2016-17.

All GM's make mistakes. I think the mark of a true GM is how does he recover from the mistakes he makes. That's where I think Holmgren grades high. He's not afraid to admit a mistake and rectify it.

very interesting that if a player tries his best, but just can't get the job done, we recognize the effort, yet want someone else for the job....but if we have a GM who does the same thing, it's sacrilege to some to call for a change...

I work for a Buffalo based company and for last few years I take heat from sabres fans telling me homer is inept. I wouldn't trade gm's with them for anything.

Maybe, but something is definitely broken with the team. If Berube gets his 7 day break here and skates the poop out of them, and we still are horrible the next ten games (like 1-9) then I'd start to wonder what the problem is.. This team may not be a contender, but I still think there is enough talent to make the playoffs and score more than they are.

Regeir is not a better GM than Homer. I heard that the fans are cheering fire Darcy at the home games.

The problem is in the just can't get the job done part. That's where this analogy falls apart. Nothing wrong with objective criticism. Like all GM's, he has made mistakes. It's when it's taken to the level of labeling him a failure as a GM that is the issue as I see it.

Well they've been through several coaches & many different roster moves, even a change in GM. Not much else they can try to see what will turn the corner.

Ive never been one for the "bag skate" mentality.....

For the most part.

However I think this team needs nothing but bag skates.

I agree totally with your final conclusion. And I think I know what the problem is, and I think Berube does also. The question becomes if they can overcome the issues before it's too late.

since the team has declined over the last few seasons and there still is no solution to the problem on D, it is your defence of him that falls flat. the knee jerk moves and general org wide impatience is universally acknowledged by all of those who are willing to see it...

in the NHL, seven yrs is an eternity and this GM has abandoned the credo he trumpeted when he was ushered in.
