If you mean hard working players that succeed in their role, then we don't have a ton of 4th liners and I wish we did.

Rather than telling reporters to "get lost", Craig just takes a nap until he hears a question he likes.

Fun fact: with the current top 6 (Timmo, Streit, Gross, Coby, Goose, LS), our average age on defense is 29.33 years old. That means the Flyers have the 9th oldest defense in the league, meaning we're slightly older than average but still middle of the pack. I do agree we need to get younger, though.

I don't think it's as much about age as it is about mix. Timonen will come off the books next year, but his decline has been steep this year. Morin is a while away if he pans out. Goose and Schenn are young decent top 6 guys. The issue we will have is that the UFA crop is not great for #1 Dmen or even 1 a's like Timonen. Really the best option is draft em. The way it's looking it'll be a lottery pick. Hextall saw what a guy like Doughty means to the team.. but they don't grow on trees.

I was thinking more along the lines of Claude Rains.

I'm of the belief that an elite/"true #1" defenseman is a very nice luxury, not a need. It's more about a good, solid 6 players who are used to their strengths. Hopefully, Gustafsson continues to get better, one of/both Lauridsen play like they did prior to last season, and Schenn improves of his decision making and positioning. After that, you have guys like Ghost/Morin/Hagg in the pipeline. It just may not happen this year.

Last 15 Cup winning teams, had Lidstrom, Niedermayer, Hatcher (in prime) Bourque, Pronger, Letang, Keith, Chara, Doughty.

A coincidence? I think not.

Only the Hurricanes, and Lightning didn't really have legit top pairing # 1 guys.

Okay. Then we have to be one of those 2/15. And for the record, I didn't consider D. Hatcher to ever be a #1 defenseman.

When the Flyers eventually do win one, I believe they will have a guy like the players I listed.

Let's hope said player isn't just a gleam in someone's eye at the present time.

A #1 would help. Or you can do it with a solid 1-6 and good forward play and superb goaltending like Carolina or TB.
