Being mean to Flyers fans isn't racist, it's a way of life.

You had better have supporting evidence to back up that claim, sir.

I imagine they'd be happier if we just threw batteries and drink cups at them, as they tend to do with folks they don't like (everyone else on the planet).

That's fair, and I do see where people draw the criticism from. I think it was partially induced by the Leafs and the expectations and proclamations that were put on him from the onset of his draft year.

However, in his slight fairness, the teams he's played on in his career have been atrocious defensively, and mediocre at best. The Leafs from 2008-2012 and the 2013 Flyers obviously. But I will tell you, that as a die-hard Flyers fan living in the Toronto area, I did watch Luke a lot and did notice his issues on the ice, and did notice a considerable difference in his play last year on a marginally better Flyers team. I think the potential is there, but right now, he is not a true elite shut-down man.

- Flyers_V88

This, alot of this, I can agree with you on. Being thrust immediately in the NHL by the Maple Leafs didn't help him. He still needed time to develop. And yes, he has played for terrible defensive teams.

JVR offers literally NOTHING but streaky goal-scoring though? You make it sound like the Flyers got raped? JVR is literally invisible on the ice if he isn't producing. He plays ZERO two-way game, and has ONLY been the beneficiary of 1st line time in Toronto... Obviously, the trade looks poor considering how much the Flyers are having scoring right now, but don't forget, JVR was nothing special here, even though he wasn't getting first line time. But don't be fooled by his time in TO too, he's been an effective scorer, but it's not consistent and his game offers literally nothing else.
- Flyers_V88

JVR was the obvious piece to move for a Dman at the time. He is a good player who everyone expected a little more from. He was redundant on your roster to me. Value wise, it was probably fair at the time. Both players solved an immediate need for the other team. The trade looks very lopsided now, but at the time ... no one could have envisioned this.

The problem with your D is that it's made up of a bunch of #3-6 guys getting paid mostly #2/3 salaries. You have Kimmo getting paid like a #1 and is, at best, a #3 guy anymore. And Streit & everyone else getting paid like #2/3 guys and none of them are a true #1 or even #2. Gustafssen is the lone exception but that's because he's on a rookie deal (I believe) and that's just not a recipe for success. They're all the same guy trying to fit into roles that they can't play. Sticking 6 guys that are solid but nobody that is really great isn't going to win. It's a straight line of mediocre on the blue line.

While Philly fan will disagree with you, I won't. This is the way I see it. Timonen isn't the player he once was; Schenn is out of position frequently; Streit is a liability defensively; Grossman is hit or miss; Coburn - have no clue with him anymore and Gustaffson is average. Even if you want to talk Meszaros, he is more in the pressbox than on the ice. This isn't a winning recipe.

I don't think anybody up our way is going to disagree with this, not in a big way anyways.

EDIT: Ok, not many would disagree. Final offer.

If you want a winning recipe try lemon basil shrimp on the Barbie with a draft IPA. That's good stuff. Serve it over garlic pasta with a side of asparagus and you are a winner!

That's certainly fair. The fact that he was underutilized in Philly basically just adds to the fact that it's not too bad. Unfortunately the return wasn't equal when you consider what JVR has become in Toronto. Like you said, that's one of the times when Holmgren seemed to be doing the right thing.

Check out the video in Garth's blog.

No words...

All i can say is i can see why they have 1 win if that's how they're treated in practice a day after a home shutout loss.

I like the variety element of HB. If I wanted Pens only I would go to Pens only blog. It's not like he was trolling. I like hockey and watch a wide variety of teams, especially Vancouver as I have several of their players in my fantasy league.

You are now probably asking yourself why it took so long to dive in to fantasy hockey. It certainly makes every game interesting.

hey gunner any chance we might see a little maata-letang pairing whenever he gets back?

I think that would be a fun pairing. probably not defensive enough for my liking. for this season I like him with scuds.

Letang-Scuds
Martin-Oprik
Maata-Niskanen

that would be my lineup.

liked engelland at RW. wouldn't like it every game obviously, but when you need that extra grit. also been impressed with bortuzzo.

I don't know if Letang will be back by the time Maatta is done. You might see some shifts with them together but I don't think they would be a pairing.

Who knows though. I don't even know what they'll do with Maatta when the 9 games are up.
