I agree fully, but no one can seem to pinpoint the exact issue? It's the strangest thing. I think it will break soon and they will start to score and win some games, but it's been an awfully poor start so far.

I think one thing that has helped us is our ability to cherry pick prime defenseman in the draft to get solid talent without the high price tag. I wonder why this hasn't done more or discussed in the Flyer organization. Buying talent is sometimes necessary but with the cap I think the farm system element becomes a key piece of the talent puzzle. You can go to cap geek and see the free agents. Not sure who is solid for me. I like Willie Mitchell but he has some baggage, but a good price.

They need to actively find someone who can take Orpik's place next year as a physical presence on the ice with in thier top 4.

Matta looks good at times and I don't think he makes alot of errors out there for a young guy but there are times that he looks indecisive out there, especially when it comes to where to pass the puck as he tries to carry it out of the penguins zone. He's better when he just tries to clear it versus trying to carry it and then make a pass.

I like the variety element of HB. If I wanted Pens only I would go to Pens only blog. It's not like he was trolling. I like hockey and watch a wide variety of teams, especially Vancouver as I have several of their players in my fantasy league.

That's never happened. I know this from the eye test.

Easier said than done. They tried to address the issue on D and swung and missed. I do agree that we don't have the number 1 guy we need, and that we maybe have too many similar natured D, but that isn't the reason we're not winning. The D hasn't been the issue, at all. And for most watching the games, there actually is somewhat of a noticeable improvement over last year's D play.

But when they've swung and missed, they just take the exact same money and pay the guy 4th down the list (because the other 2 in that top 4 signed elsewhere while they were busy courting the #1 guy) of available FA's instead of holding on and looking for a trading partner that wants to dump some salary for a pick or prospect or both. And that #4 guy on the list turns out again to be the exact same guy that they've already got 3 or 4 of on the roster from trying the exact same move the previous year. Inevitabely, they end up with 5 of the same player on the roster for the same price. Guys that would be 3/4 guys most places. And they're trying to fit them into 1/2/5/6 roles.

As for the forwards, the blame lays mostly on them for the team's performance. If they don't score, we don't win. I also don't buy your argument about our lack of 1st line guys... By that logic, Pittsburgh has 3 players that are top 6 guys? Crosby, Malkin, and Neal? Lecavalier, Hartnell, G, Simmer, Voracek, and Read are top 6 guys on most teams in the league. They're all capable for 20+ goals when healthy and producing. So I don't think that flies either, we have the talent to be competitive.

I'd argue that Kunitz also belongs on that top 6 list as well from before the time he was even in Pittsburgh. He was playing top 6 in Anaheim when we traded for him, on a team that had won the cup only a year or so earlier. But you have a point there. The thing is, Lecavalier is a 2nd line guy at best at this point in his career. Simmonds is a Cooke type player (in that he can fit on a 2nd or 3rd line as the situation dictates), Hartnell is a 3rd liner at this point on a SC-contender and Read had 1 good year so far and then a pretty ho-hum year last year. He's another 2nd line guy on a good team and probably only gets spot duty in the top 6 on a SC-contender.

I don't disagree about G and Voracek as solid top 6 players at all. G is a top-line guy and Voracek is a 1st or 2nd liner depending on what team he's on. But with the exception of Duper, the Pens have 4 guys that are Top 6 in just about every team in the league. Additionally, while G is definitely a top-line player, he's not a "make everyone else around him awesome" player. Yet. He may turn into one, but I put him on the tier right below Crosby, Ovie and Malkin (when Malkin isn't being lazy). He's with Kane and Toews and the like. Stellar players that are right there but not quite. But he's young and learning still.

That's a big difference. The Pens might have some guys that are 2nd/3rd line guys on most other teams playing in their top 6, but they have Crosby and Malkin too, who can make up for some of their line-mates deficiencies. Jokinen is a legit top 6 on half the teams in the league as well. He had a bad year or so in Carolina but has picked it back up to his Dallas years level again. Could that be a product of playing with a guy like Malkin? Sure. But he's performing at that level regardless.

And the thing is, all of those guys play different games. Malkin & Crosby couldn't be more different players if they tried. Neal and Kunitz are built the same but totally different players. Same with Jokinen, Bennett and Duper. They're all very different type players. Where as with the Flyers, it seems like everyone in their top 6 is the same guy except Giroux and Vorachek. Moderately quick to fast, physical, crash the net guys. There's 1 sniper and 1 playmaker in that top 6. The rest are Christ Kunitz without a Crosby or Malkin to set them up. They need the playmaker, the sniper and the banger/forechecker on each line. They don't have it.

I think that derrick England is just being show cased so that we might get more outta him when the time comes to let him go. my only issue with letting him go is who will be our enforcer? Who will we stick in, in times of need. we don't have McIntyre any more. I have heard that the zylonrerwhatev is a tough guy, but I didn't see any of that outta him last night
