I do wonder if what things would be like if they hadn't essentially wasted training camp. What if Berube or another coach had an offseason with these guys? This malaise was there from day 1 of the offseason.
- Flyers_01

yes but the "not playing for 60 minutes" BS has been around longer than that....it just seems to be getting progressively worse

When Vinny is ready who do they sit? I say either Fraud Giroux or Jake the snake bitten. This team is looking for a leader to step up, but so far no one has done that. For all the ex C's on this team I don't see one true leader this year. This is a very defeated team.

They had some scoring chances, most notably a point-blank chance for Brayden Schenn with lots of net in front him that ended up either getting knocked wide off Marc-Andre Fleury's stick or simply missing high and wide on its own

The shot definitely deflected off Fleury's stick, you can see it hit and change direction in the replay. Otherwise that is probably a goal.

I think a trade is all but certain at this point.
- hereticpride

a trade? more like how many?

Penguins were w/o Neal & Letang, imagine how much worse that 2nd period would have been?

How could you be 1-6 & stop skating at any point?

Huge Giroux fan.

Giroux seemed to benefit from the wise council of the veteran presence on the team (Jagr, Briere). Perhaps, I am just pulling at straws, but it seems like the weight of the captaincy is continuing from last year in pulling him down.

Bill, you live in Dallas right?

Maybe you can do a blog of the parallels between jerry jones, who we all love to laugh at, and Ed snider?

One mis step after another from this team. This season will most likely eclipse 06/07 for futility. I can't expect homer will be the gm for long here.

The Flyers did a good job killing off that 60 minute power play.

I may be a little behind in this assessment as I've tried giving everyone (the players) the benefit of the doubt but... I'm starting to think the collection of players just isn't that good. It's the simplest explanation. And it isn't just that the young guys have to grow and become better players, which they will. It's all the other guys that should be past that point of their development that aren't making plays on a consistent basis.

Even with Mason playing well that one win against Florida was nothing short of a fluke. They were outplayed and the goals that were scored were very soft.

Bill I wish this team had half the dedication and played with half the effort that you put into covering this team.

I have no idea how Holmgren still has a job. Oh wait now I remember sniders press conference. Next alum up please!

Tired of watching Giroux watch his teammates dig for the puck in the corners and tired of him making low percentage passes. The invisible force field around the net needs to go.

I hope G and everyone else takes this week to really evaluate themselves an their play. Problem is every time I hear Giroux talk he's saying they are working hard and playing pretty well and eventually the goals will come. They will not come if he keeps playing the way he's playing.

While he did dig the hole himself, maybe he should get the chance to dig himself out? He did it in 2007... maybe he can do it again.

I still don't think Holmgren will be "fired", but it'll be the "I'm stepping away" thing that Clarke did. And I think it's happening sooner than later (end of this season or next season), with or without pressure from above.

This week long break is a great time to change coaches, but they already did that.. I really hope Vinny is back and inspired on Thursday. Need a spark!

I think Vinny can help replace the lost veteran leadership up front. He's no Jagr but he has a ton of experience and a cup. With he and hartnell out, the pressure only mounts on Giroux. I really hope once we are healthy this team can string some wins together. Can't forget we are 2 top forwards down right now.

I was wondering if homer planned this to be his last year once he brought in hextall.

I wonder if they start believing all these cliches they spit out over and over. I guess if they do, it's up to the coach to bring them back to reality, but the players have to actually believe it to act on it.

you're right. but every guy they bring here either immediately or eventually loses most of the skill that made them effective elsewhere. b schenn was "the best player not in the nhl", and that from other folks in the league not just flyers' spin, and it wasn't because he was missing wide open nets from 5' out in the slot in big games like he did last night. simmonds looked awesome his first year here and now it looks like he never played the game (exaggeration for emphasis) and if matt read misses one more puck trying to take a shot i will need to be institutionalized; i won't even get in to giroux's embarrassing and mortifying loss of confidence/talent/whatever, but it is really an epidemic that starts somewhere beyond the ice surface and the locker room.
- hogweed

it is not just read missing the net it a majority of the shots.. it is really to bad you cant institute a fine for missing the net the flyers could pay one of the big name contracts with the money they miss so often

That was my thought when it happened too. Guess we'll see in a couple months how it plays out
