Most NHL announcers will stick to labels when it comes to teams. Like when we had our top 4 centers as Briere, Giroux, Schenn and Coots and everyone kept talking about the rough and tough flyers team that liked to impose their size.

Mason has 4 consecutive horrendous years in Columbus to atone for and though his numbers look good this year, his record does not (thus far). Those in the know recognize his turn around but the national media is going to take a bit to stop thinking the flyers are always a bruising team that has issues in goal.

Most media are lazy and like to tell things in narratives, regardless of whether or not the narrative is true.

Despite their record under Berube, I think the Flyers have looked far and away better than under Lavy this year. I think the change was the right call. For whatever reason this team was not in game shape for the beginning of the year. When McGinn and Raffl come in and look like they have that much of a step on some of the Veterans, you have to ask if the Phantoms were getting better conditioned that the Flyers were. I have a feeling Berube is going to be skating this team hard til they start to pick up some speed. Overall I'm much happier with the effort and play of this team since the coaching change. I'm confident they will be a competitive team soon. But how fast is going to be the question of making the playoffs or not.

We're going to have to figure out how to get through the next two games and manage 2 points somehow, then take the next 6 days off to put together a solid approach for the rest of the season, and also during that time, allow the lines to develop some chemistry and play the way they're expected to play.

It doesn't sound so difficult when you put it like that.

That 6 day break should spawn some improvement. Will give Berube time to implement things, and the team can work on cohesion. Vancouver isn't playing all that well, beating Pittsburgh seems like a tall task.

If there's one thing that should wake some of these guys up, it's a tilt against the Penguins.

I hope.

That's another positive for Flyers right now. Other teams that were expected to do well are also struggling as of now. Rangers Caps and Devils are all stumbling out of the gate

They better employ what they've learned so far against the Pens, because whatever it was they saw against Detroit will be a vacation compared to playing Pittsburgh right now.

There is nothing Pittsburgh would like to do more than embarrass Philadelphia in that game.

How they come out and play after those 6 days off will be interesting.

Hopefully, they will look like an entirely different team utilizing the time off for Berube to place them in the direction he wants.

Worst case scenario...if they come out looking no better, or marginally better, than before the break, what then?

No doubt about it. I know it's cliched sounding, but I think these two teams really get up when they're due to play each other. I'm hoping it's a prime opportunity for Captain Clode to get back on track.

Metro Standings -
#1 Pitt
#2 Car
#3 NYI
#4 Columbus

Other than Pittsburgh it looks like Bizarro world. The Flyers have played the most games in the division but that will even out this week.

I hate to think along these lines, but if it starts to go wrong in Pittsburgh, I'd love to see guys start throwing flying elbows at Neal. He's my #1 most hated player in the league right now. I know it would likely result in a suspension for someone, but really, at least it would make me smile.

Colorado sporting the best record in the NHL. Calgary a top-3 in their division and Vancouver on the outside looking in.

Give it a week or 2.

I don't share that outlook, but I'll grant you this: If Neal or Malkin ever catch a face full of elbow, I'll feel absolutely no sympathy.

I actually said this to my girlfriend last night:

"On Thursday, if you get back from PCOM on time, you might be able to catch the 3rd period. It's against the Pens. It's either gonna be the start of a new season, or it's gonna be 8-1. I really hope it's the first one."

Also, if anyone ever jumps Malkin at the end of a game and absolutely tunes him up and doesn't get the mandatory 1-game suspension.
