We have 3 hal gill

Luke will be fine, he has more tools then the other 2

- puckhead17

He's too slow in everything he does. I watched some of the islanders game. When the puck comes up the boards to their dmen in the offensive zone, they bring it off te wall and pit a hard shot on net or a quick point pass in less than half the time the flyers can.

This league now the offense has to start from the back end. The blue line needs a full rebuild. Get gusty up here now to start

Carle had his warts, no use listing them. But given his age and puck skills I think he would have been better choice then resorting to a long deal with a past prime Streit.
- Marc D

Yeah, even a bad deal w/ Carle would have helped them to steer clear of the mistake of signing Streit.

I've been among the most vociferous critics of the Streit signing on here, but even I'm shocked at just how absolutely useless he is at ES after watching him for 5-games. He makes Bruno Gervais look like Denis Potvin in the d-zone.

On Carle, he is pretty close to exactly what this team could use.

In retrospect it is pretty easy to see this, but at the time no one here wanted the Flyers to give Carle the deal he got with Tampa Bay. The mistake was not getting a more friendly deal before he hit UFA. Maybe they tried, we cannot know the details.

Everyone sees now the offense failing to score, and lack of attackers in front of the net.
With a guy like Carle, he helped set up the attack, was able to set up goals with good passes, and by holding onto the puck allowed forwards to get in front and in scoring positions. Now the forwards are so busy trying to get the puck in the zone and get it off the boards that there is no one free to go to the net.

Carle also had the skill set to make a young defenseman play better. His time playing paired with Bourdon is one example. I don't think the current guys with the exemption of Kimmo can do this.

i could've lived w/ that...hated the whole JVR/carle/schenn dynamic at the time...hate it even more now. i used the word dynamic to describe JVR and is there an adjective better at describing what's lacking w/ this team?

Not you, too...Christ, it's turned into WIP in here; the defeatists have taken over. 5 games in - 2 of them under a new coach - and the season's a wash.

Sure, they look like crap right now. Give Berube a little time. If this keeps up, there will be personnel changes on the roster. If that doesn't snap 'em out of it, maybe all really is lost. It just seems a little premature to lose all hope at this point.

- tangent_man

amen man

and that's not to say they don't suck right now, but the "defeatist" attitude in here is kind of pathetic. what does the wailing and wallowing get anyone? observing deficiencies is one thing...

Streit wasn't signed for his defensive prowess... He was signed for his puck moving ability, and he absolutely gives the Flyers a credible scoring threat on the backend... blah, blah, blah, yadda, yadda, yadda....

The reason I haven't understood your disdain for Streit because he's the only defenseman out there making any kinds of plays, accurate passes, up to the forwards to get offense started.

There were at least...three, maybe four instances where Streit got offensive rushes started, one of them with the type of skilled pass to Lecavalier that no one else on that defense has a prayer of seeing develop, let alone complete.

I understand the guy isn't Denis Potvin. Far from it. But really, is he honestly the biggest problem this team has? I don't know that they'd even be able to get up the ice without dumping it out of the zone, if he weren't here.

Right, I do understand, but does Jägr get 5 years? How about Iginla? Alfredson? Did Briere? I understand Vinny isn't quite as old as they are, but Christ, he has 16 years on his body, and check his most 3 recent seasons, he's missed a nice chunk of time in each.
I would have let Schenn center the 2nd line & rather had went with Mason Raymond at least, would have increased our speed, but that wasn't the sexy $$$ splash Homer falls in love with.

It's pretty bad when your a team that can use a CBO every summer if you were allowed to do so.

i would keep a minimum # of vets and try to let the rest of a young core grow together. want hexy to do the reboot.

I saw a lot of good things last night. We were getting a lot of good chances, it just seems like we have an inability to finish. I'd gander to say we actually outplayed Phoenix last night. When we were looking sluggish, Berube held a skating intensive practice to quicken us up a bit. Maybe if he held a shooting intensive practice, we could get some more pucks in the net.

the problem i had with the whole thing is that we wasted no time locking up coburn and grossmann, but waited on carle (when he was exactly the type of player we couldn't afford not to have). should've given carle his money and gambled on grossmann, but what's done is done

I'd take the good with the bad if he was effectively stretching the defense and hitting guys with speed with regularity... but he's not.

He's flubbing a lot of cross-ice passes and outlets, and 75% of his clearing attempts end up as feeble turnovers... hardly becoming of a guy with so much puck skills.

He obviously needs an abundance of room to work with to be effective... if anybody's within 5-feet of him, he's a completely different player. Give him some space and suddenly you see some playmaking and some nice passing, but this isn't a league where you have that kind of time at ES anymore.

if things really fall off the rails, maybe hexy can get the jump ~ mid season...not that it's likely, but knowing that we have a new coach, who seems to be taking a sensible tack and a new GM would make me feel better about the org going forward.

The biggest reasons for the justified concern are:

1. With the new alignment, Detroit/Columbus in the conference and 16 teams, a disastrous start could mean you're out of the playoffs by December.

2. To the Flyers and their octogenarian ruler, missing the playoffs two years in a row is unacceptable, so they will be desperate to make personnel changes.

3. When has a desperate Flyers trade ever worked out? Ok lately. The Recchi for Desjardins/LeClair might be the last one, but I have NO CONFIDENCE in Homer pulling this off right now.

Let the hextall era begin. I don't see this team solving problems without a rebuild. Unfortunately most of the players we need to get rid of to start this are on nmc for the next half decade
- PhillaBully

Exactly! You guys are the Flames from 2 years ago. We've been lucky so far this year but at least it's been exciting. Giroux is a stud, just going through a rough patch. His hand is probably still hurting him.

I'd think about Raffl on the 2nd line and Simmonds on the 3rd. Why the hell not? Hopefully Raffl comes in and shows this guys how it's done.

Yea anything now will be a move from a position of weakness......trade deadline could be interesting though. Might as well see who can play and who can't until then.

But of course we have pretty fantastic goaltending going on right now, if we suck but find out Mason is the real deal it will make this year more bearable.
