When I look at this clip all I can think of is how similar it is to the Moore/Naslund hit a few years ago. A player reaching for the puck, putting himself in vulnerable position, and another player makes contact with the head.
I remember how outraged every Canuck fan I knew was that there wasn't any discipline at the time. That was in a far different era with a player who didn't have a suspension history and it led to maybe the ugliest incident in the league's history.
Moore deserved a suspension...so did Edler. - djamon
Typical coming from you...
Watch the clip of Moore on Naslund again;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jbB9NCRTkw
Moore targets the head, swings his elbow, launches himself through the hit, and leaves his feet in the process.
But yes, Naslund also put himself in a vulnerable position. Only similarity.
Edler takes a direct line, squares his shoulder, keeps his elbow tucked, and Hertl reaches, lowers his head and opens his body just before Edler makes contact.
We've had more fans from other teams, even Sharks fans, call the suspension BS.
Really not surprised you think the hits are similar, though |

I actually agree that the 2 hits are similar. Is the moore hit worse yes but to say the edler hit is a clean hit is wrong.
I have a friend who is a player agent and he said to me the NHL has essentially told every team that if a player contacts another players head it is an automatic 2 game suspension. It can go to 3+ games for a variety of the other reasons.
The biggest issue isnt that edler got suspended its the fact that the NHL isnt consistent. I have a bigger problem with the NHL not handing out similar suspensions when equal or worse offenses occur. (keith hit, Chara etc).

Not even close to the same... the speed was ten times faster... and moore destroyed Naslund.... He was never the same player.... Hertl was playing the next shift and didn't even hit the ice. Go watch again. |

That's it Fosco...get personal.
I said there was similarities...not that they were identical. Moore didn't "launch" himself, nor leave his feet...he tripped over Naslund after contact. Much different.
For the record, I think Moore's hit was bad for sure and should have been penalized. But what I really noticed was this constant theme from Canuck fans that Hertl should keep his head up...Hell, one guy even suggested he should get a game for putting himself in a vulnerable position. But no one ever said that in Naslund's case.
This is at least 3 times Edler has had one of these accidentally/on purpose hits. He knew what he was doing and it won't get any better for him in the future.

There are some very important differences.
Edler is skating with his shoulder squared in a direct line towards Hertl, he makes no motion to target the head, and he doesn't leave his feet or launch himself through the hit.
The video I posted shows the Moore hit better than PKer's gif.
Moore makes a motion with his elbow towards Naslund's head at the moment of contact (meaning he specifically targets it), and he clearly launches himself through the hit and leaves his feet. |

He fell from the contact of his elbow hitting Naslunds head at high speed while hitting nothing else.

Im not saying they are identical. I dont think edler made a targeting move either but the fact is I dont think Moore made a targeting hit towards Naslund either. Naslund lunged for the puck and was in a vulnerable state and also lower than he normally would be. If he was upright that elbow that moore contacted him with would have been on his shoulder not his head. That is obvious in the video.
Edler didnt target him and I dont think Edler is dirty but he made contact with the head which is a fact. So he deserves to be gone. The real issue is the NHL not dealing with all dirty plays the same.

Edler was cutting off Hertl at the boards (not head on in open ice leading with an elbow and making sure it make solid head contact)..... Did a shoulder to shoulder hit..... Moore went high on Naslund at a much higher rate of speed.... and destroyed him by driving his elbow into Naslunds head. Basically almost ending Naslunds Career. yet you really think those are similar..... gimme a break. If Hertl actually did up his helmet properly there probably wouldn't even be a suspension. |

Oh piss off, djamon, what did I say about you that isn't true? You don't look at anything Canuck related without already having a negative slant.
Moore does not trip over Naslund's stick, he launches himself. It's blatantly apparent. He also makes a motion with his elbow into Naslund's head.
Edler does none of these things. |

After his elbow drove naslunds head backwards..... kinda hard to trip over knees when the opposing player is reaching forward.

So now it's the knee...?
It's the forward momentum from launching himself into the hit. |

Watch the video I posted. Clear motion towards Naslund's head by Moore's arm, and he leaves his feet as he launches through.
It's pretty clear. |
