I don't get the hate on Gionta.

(apart from the fact that he's short)

- DrRecchi

I like him, but with Desharnais and Brière not getting out of here for another season, not resigning him (or making him one of the 3 captains traded at the trade deadline) would be the easy way to get bigger.

Wouldn't mind if they resigned him short term, if Bergevin finds a way to trade Desharnais or Briere.

I don't hate him. He was a serviceable guy, got a good contract, did his job. Habs just need to replace him with a bigger less injury prone guy.
- BashCH

Habs should continue getting the top 9 bigger. Gallagher is Gionta's replacement. Like you said, time to get a bigger forward into the mix....

Who?

Keep in mind that Gionta scores 20 goals a year while playing hard defensive minutes against the other teams top line.

i'm thinking you'll get guys like Shawn Thornton as captain. to use a Bruins example. he's ultra popular, works hard, does the dirty work, etc. i just don't think a 4th line or limited minute guy should be captain.
- Fountain-San

No one is going to name Parros Moen or White as the captain.

I don't care who...right now they have 4 very small guys in the top 9. Not resigning Gionta is the easiest way to get rid of one. Give the job to a young guy (like Bournival). Maybe he won't score 20 the first year but he'll learn more playing top minutes than 6 minutes once in a while on the 4th line.

Exactly, if we play Bournival instead of Gionta in the top 6.

EDIT : Sorry, I just don't see the point in offering him another contract....

agree. especially since we have Gallagher already, and DD and Briere here for at least one more year after this one. the forwards have to start getting bigger.

So he brings his friend John Tavares afterwards, the same way Gomez brought in his buddy Gionta?

I like your thinking.
