Getting Vanek for cheap would give us that one-dimensional goal scorer that would help. (jus sayin')

Vanek and Giroux would be great together.

But Vanek is going to want 8 years at $7.5 million and will be 30 in January. I don't know if that's the best use of the Flyers cap space.

Streit isn't seeing first unit PP time. That coupled with he's a liability in his own end and I'm not excited about him. He's an adequate puck mover, but he doesn't skate that well, and isn't remotely physical.

He should be, though. Kimmo has been poor on the top PP unit so far, and should be saving his energy for ES and the PK.

Took him a while in the preseason, but the real story I am happy about so far is Mason. He's been solid every start IMO. I am hoping the team can start to give him more help than Tuesday, and if so, we're in business. Streit has been good so far IMO. He's def not the reason for a slow start.

One theory is that they didn't play enough in the pre-season. They kept 50-60 guys around for a long time, perhaps that glut caused drills to be hard to run and kept them from doing more 5 on 5 "scrimmage" time practices and game situations.

Berube talked about it in ASF's column, saying they didn't get enough good skating in during camp, not that they were out of shape.

I know we are onto a new blog but just want to say I agree here about them misusing the preseason.

The team brought in 3 big FA signings and you could even say Mason was a fourth given how he joined late last year. It seems to me they would want to maximize the preseason and get guys used to each other. I hated those split squad games. Is it a team's choice how they schedule the preseason games? Obviously they and the coach had a lot on the line, and didn't use the time well.

Also I am befuddled at Lavi's line combos to start the season.
It seemed to be another thing that worked against him. Berube recognized it and went back to the familiar lines right away. Not sure it would have ultimately made any difference in the outcome of the coach being fired but seemed like a mistake to me.

I hope Mason has a great year.
With only seeing the highlights so far the VC signing seems to be working out too.
