Hey, again, I'm not saying the trade was the best, or even overly smart. But sadly, there was a reason behind it, albeit not a good one.

really? Bobrovsky and Pavelec makes the list but Loungo, Broduer, Lehtonen, Smith, and Neimi dont?
- youarewrong

My list include Luongo and Niemi. Bobjust won a Vezina, kind hard to leave him off. Brodeur WAS a #1, he's not anymore (I actually had him on origianlly). Not sold on Lehtinen as a #1, same with Smith (looks almost as good as Bryzgalov did in Phx).

Yes, they are elite, and I'll add Rinne. The #1 goalies to me (besides them):

Miller (maybe)
Bobrovsky
Price
Niemi
Luongo
Pavelec (maybe)

- jmatchett383

For me, it's

1) Lunqvist
2) Rask
3) Rinne
4) Quick
5) Price
6) Luongo
7) Schneider
8) Thomas (last game not withstanding)

I'm not a firm believer in Bob yet, and I have no idea how Niemi keeps putting up the numbers with how ugly he is to watch.

Pavelec is a pretty terrible goalie, not sure how he made your cut.

Markov is old, but he fits the criteria that I listed before.

We don't get to see much of Enstrom, mostly due to injury, but he's actually kind of godly.

Isn't Markov just a powerplay specialist?

May I remind you that, the Flyers finished 20th overall?

Because a player is put in a certain spot doesn't mean that's where he should be.
There's a difference being a true #1 and being a #1 by necessity.

- Pecafan Fan

Luke Schenn played pretty damn well last season...above expectations, I think. He's had a slow start this season...but too early to make conclusions about his game going forward imo.

For some reason my post wouldn't show up. Take 2, action!

That's the definition of a # 1 dman to me. A guy who impacts the game on both sides of the puck, plays in all situations, and gives you 25 all-star caliber minutes per night.

IMO, if there are 15 of those guys in the NHL it's a lot.

- PLindbergh31

Our own Bill Meltzer wrote about this a while back ( http://www.hockeybuzz.com...n-Flyers-History/45/44964 ):

The rarest of commodities in the NHL is the true "franchise defenseman" who embodies six or more characteristics among the following nine traits: regular goal-scoring ability, passing that triggers top-speed breakouts from the defensive zone, outstanding positional defense, size and physicality, high-end mobility skating forward or backward, the hockey sense to known when to pinch and when to stay back, shot blocking, durability and locker room leadership.

A lot of that blog post is relevant to the conversation.

I think he's a good goalie on a not very good defensive team. Good players on the defense, bad overall result.

If you're not a believer in Bob, how can you be a believer in Schneider, a guy who fell flat on his face the only time he was given the #1 role?

Nope. Top unit PP, top unit PK, 25-min/game.

He's a 23 year old defenseman. It's in my opinion that Dmen tend not to hit their primes til around 27. It would amaze me if this is LSchenn's max.
- JAKEw1234

prob will max out over the nxt 100-150 gms. will he show more O ability? prob not. likely better at making quick decisions and positioning. what other areas do you think he will improve based on the talent he's displayed thus far?

And again, Franchise is differnet then Number 1 IMO. According to Bill A franchise Defenseman needs to show 6 of those attributes regularly, I would think then a Number 1 defenseman needs to show 4 nightly.

Schneider is definitely borderline... think he'll be there, though. Bernier and Holtby I would keep an eye on, too.

Bob's had one good season out of left field... it's like Jeff Carter's 47-goal year... I need to see him get close to that level again before I feel comfortable labeling him as money in the bank.

Pavelec is all over the place mentally.... so many soft goals at the worst times.

If Schenn maintains a 20 pt average each season and improves his positional game, I have no issues with him as the number two defenseman on this team. Would be great if he improved his skating but for a guy that big, positioning is more important

Foster or Luke Schenn last season (they probably wouldn't have hung with Foster but I'm okay with proposal), what difference would it have made in the long run?

Schenn's actually been better than I thought he would and I still don't like the trade. Not only did we sell low on an injured JVR but we traded for a Defenceman that at the time had so soured the Leafs that he was getting limited ice time and being scratched for John Michael Liles.

Like I said, Schenn's playing better than I thought and this isn't to trash him as a player. It's about the trade and IMO it was a bad one made at a bad time for the asset we let go.

I thought Holtby was one to watch last season, too. Then I watched him a few times, and oh boy is he a "meh" goaltender during the reg season. A lot of soft goals.

If he can pick his spots a little better, that would be nice. If he could improve on his skating, that would be nice, but as was stated, positional play can cover up for skating, so that would be nice too.

Well, Byfuglien did lead the Blackhawks in playoff goals in 2010 and played all 82 regular season games that season, so he's definitely a bigger part of that team than Gagne was in LA
- Jsaquella

And he was one of the only players who could go toe to toe with Pronger, esp. when they put him (Prongs) in front on the PP (hence the pic I posted)
