On the Buff talk from EK. I just dont see how the Flyers can afford to give up a top 6 forward and a blue collar prospect. At the very least it sounds like Read and Cousins for Buff. While not totally aweful a price, the Flyers would definately have to find a way to replace 2 3rd line players.

Can't he also go to the Flyers (if they wanted him to)? I seem to remember Ryan Parent playing maybe 2 games with the Phantoms at the end of the year and then 1 game with the Flyers later.

He might be eligible to do so after his Junior Season ends, but let's remember the 9 game rule. And he'd have to be on the roster by the trade deadline to be eligible to play in the playoffs.

They would only need to replace one 3rd line player in that deal.

I actually don't really have a problem with the blueline as constructed. Aside from the Montreal game (I didn't see it, but heard it was pathetic team-wide), they really haven't had defense issues. The team-wide defense needs to improve instead of forwards being 50 feet away as soon as the defense gets the puck.

I've been critical of the defense. There are times where they rush and panic and just wheel the puck around the boards without looking. However, the defense and forwards need to get onto the same page so that, when they do get it, they should know how to move it instantaneously, as opposed to blindly hoping there's a player in line with their pass/clear attempt.

The Flyers should definitely look to improve every position of the team, but not at the cost of weakening themselves at another position. Let's see how this new defensively-minded philosophy plays out before depleting our already depleted and much-debated lack of a 3rd line winger.

Dealing from desperation is not really a good look.

I don't want the Flyers dealing anybody right now and I especially am not interested in Dustin Byfuglien.

Oh, absolutely. I wasn't talking about the 9-game rule, just that I believe that, after his junior season ends, he can play for either team. That's all.

When the defense is pressured, and doesn't have an outlet, they have two choices. Eat the puck, or try and rim it around the boards or off the glass. Further away from the net is the preference.

Read's been one of the only forwards to consistently show up for the 4 games so far. And perhaps our D will be a problem later, but right now our O is the prime issue.

I wouldn't take Byfuglien even if they's take Pronger's contract off our hands. If the Flyers wanted to trade Grossmann, it wouldn't be that hard to do. The contract isn't a hindrance.

Well, thank you. I'm glad you been in touch with GMs and AGMs around the league to be able to confirm this for us all.

Here is the link to the quiz. Not sure if you can see it outside of Canada. Pretty poor job there.

I have no contact with any team personnel, but I'm pretty a sure a big, hard-hitting stay-at-home defenseman who's a top shot blocker in the league is not ridiculously hard to move at his current cap hit.

I would not trade Couturier for Gardiner.
- MJL

It would be a foolish move to make, especially during the season. Couturier is only 20 and is locked up at a minimal cap hit for three years. If Toronto is happy to dump 23 year old Jake Gardiner despite the fact half their starting defensemen will be free agents next year, that tells you what kind of value he should have. Less than Couturier.

As much as I'd like another right shot and someone who can move on the back end, Dustin Byfuglien isn't a guy who I'd want to see.

As a professional athlete, the one thing no one should ever question is your conditioning. Your foot speed, your hockey IQ, your shot...fine. Those things are physical limitations that have ceilings.

But your physical conditioning is something you can control, and too many have questioned Byfuglien's desire to be fit, for too long, for it to be just rumor and innuendo.

People questioned Scott Hartnell's conditioning last year...

I'd have interest in seeing the Flyers pursue Gardiner. As far as what it would take to get the deal done, I don't know. I haven't heard.
- bmeltzer

Id absolutely pursue him if I were the Flyers, and I'd give up one of Couturier or Laughton and another piece (Gusty?) to do so , providing B Schenn wont be enough to get it done.

Bill, Yesterday I pointed out that Philly considered trading g awhile ago to Florida. Other posters never heard of it but I'm certain I heard somewhere that Philly did indeed consider a trade of g to Florida. Do you recall this any any details of those rumors. I think g was still in jr's at the time but not certain?
- SMS4016

I think your thinking of when they were considering moving JVR for Vokoun. Florida may have been asking for Giroux, but weren't getting either.

I'm not saying he's untradeable. There are plenty of fools out there.

Just not as confident as others that someone would want to acquire a 3rd pairing sequoia with bad knees with that contract, and give up something of value.

Especially when guys like Hal Gill are signing for under $1 million.

I dont think Toronto would do that trade either, since they are said to be asking for Yakupov.

Well, for equal value, no. But yes, you could move him (dump him, if you will) rather easily. If you say "Hey, we have a guy with bad knees," then no, you can't. But if you say, "Any interest in a stay-at-home defender who hits like a train and is in the top-1o in shot blocks every year despite having to wear knee braces," then yes, he becomes more attractive. It's all a matter of what you need and what attributes you are looking for.

Bill,

I thought Rosehill did not enter the box when he turned and went over to get in the mix? maybe I am missing the rule here, but if i rememebr the replay and the game correctly, he was at the penalty box, but turned and went over...is this a technicallity? Did he actually "leave" the box? just wondering when his action actually became a second penalty...I think we have seen guys drop the gloves on the way to the box in the past, but don't recall the ruling there either...

Thanks!

I think it's a technicality. He was going over to the penalty box for the original minor, then turned and skated back to engage in the schuffle. The actual leaving the box issue may have been why he got the 10-minute misconduct, but it was his on-ice actions (both roughing, I believe) that got him the 4 minutes.
