does Streit have a no trade?
- vejim

Update: I don't think he does after digging a bit more...

Shouldn't be a problem. I've heard he's got a great attitude.

Yeah, Buff's production has actually been increasing in recent seasons, and he hasn't been injury prone really, so I'm not sure where this getting older, breaking down etc., concern is coming from...you wanna talk about age related decline? Timonen (love the guy, but yeah, it's getting to be an issue).
- exlund

Timonen can't play the corners battles anymore without holding. He does it every time. Its a miracle he doesn't spend half the game in the box.

But seriously, it's a shame he's a bit of a mess in his own end. Then guy is a great offensive talent.

The cheesesteak clause. You'll find in under the Ed Snider (also called "Revenue Sharing") section.

A better, younger, fatter, more physical Mark Streit.

No way.

It's got nothing to do with the fact Timonen is currently playing with the Flyers even if he's clearly washed up.

Mind you, I used to like Timonen style of play, but quite frankly, he's pretty much done at this point.

- Pecafan Fan

He's obviously not the player that he was a few years ago. But he's certainly not done.

He's becoming a better tackler with age. If only that skill translated to NFL players.

That must be why he says he's 99% sure he'll retire at the end of the current season.

To be honest he hasn't done much this season so far for me to back you up on this. I like Timonen, but he does look.... well... done.

It pains me to say it because he's my favorite Flyers' defenseman of all time (since we missed out on Bourque and Weber), but he's definitely lose a few steps. Still a great outlet passer and can still break up an odd-man rush better than any player I've ever seen, but the foot speed has finally seems to be failing him.

He hasn't played well to this point. But there's a lot of players on the team who haven't played well. I expect him to bounce back.

I think he's going to have to adjust his game somewhat, and play a little differently in some situations. I think he's smart enough to get that together.

You're both right, to a degree. His quote was:

"I’m not saying this is 100 percent my last year,” Timonen said last week,” but it could be. It’s definitely pretty close to the end.”

So it's no "99.9%" but it very well could be. He stated that one of his big goals was to play for Finland at the Olympics this year, so it could be a nice little last hurrah like Forsberg had; play one last NHL season and one last Olympic games. Logically, it's probably his last season.

"99 percent sure that's my last," Kimmo said after Thursday's loss to the Florida Panthers. "

Straight from the horses' mouth. But hey, feel free to twist it in any way you want and have a 10 pages long argument around what he said.

I remember MJL arguing that Timonen was a player in decline and losing steps a few years ago, I was arguing that he was still a good skater and it wasn't a significant decline...but now, he's right!

That was from February. Granted, he still said it, but he also said he thought 2012/2013 was going to be his last.

That said, I believe this will be his last. I never played hockey anywhere near his level, and I can say from experience that it kills you to not be able to play the way you're used to. Most frustrating thing in sports. Mine was from conditioning and time off and I didn't wanna/couldn't put the effort in. For him, it seems like Father Time is the culprit.

Here's the thing.

He's doing nothing but getting older and, unless he becomes a Gary Roberts disciple or something overnight, a man as big as he is tends to break down very quickly and very badly (Hi Ryan Howard!).

I love the numbers that he hangs up. Today.

Where does that leave us when (not if, but when) he breaks down because of his size?

- johndewar

He's 28. He can certainly adopt a better conditioning program over the two years left on his deal. He's not locked into an 8 year deal, if he comes in and doesn't work on that aspect, then trade him away or let him leave as a FA

Regardless, the guy lost a major step. They all do at one point. There's no shame in that.

He's had a great career.
