Again, reportedly Buff has trimmed down to circa 265 lbs and has brought a new attitude and committment to the rink this season. Yes there were reports he ballooned up to 300 last season, but even if true, it's not like his game suffered that much. He's always played at a relatively heavy weight, yet still produced among the elite defensemen in the league. You don't/can't do that by being a lazy fat azz.

Let's, for the moment, suppose he has indeed addressed those fitness/committment concerns. Would there be others that would still make you still NOT WANT? What are they? Personally, I feel that Big Buff is probably the closest any single (active) player can come to matching what Pronger brought to the ice...maybe Weber is in that category too, but that ship has sailed.

I'd heard reports on personality issues (not sure exactly what was said, it was a while back). But even if that weren't the case, something about him just puts me off. He seems a bit undisciplined and prone to bad penalties. If you want to compare him to Pronger, Pronger knew when to pick his spots (more or less). He puts up great offensive numbers, and he can hit, but his lack of discipline and defensive miscues make me say do not want.

He finished (FINISHED!) last season at 302 lbs.

Forget about what he came in at at camp.

He finished the season at 302 lbs.

As he gets older, explain how that gets better.

A lot of professional athelets are thier heaviest during the middle of thier careers, and as they get older they drop weight.

Building thru the draft is a lot easier when you miss the playoffs nine years out of 10/ five years out of six.

But St Louis is my second favorite franchise so I wouldn't mind seeing them win a Cup finally. Must be tough on the fans to have never won a championship, and not even made the Finals since 1970.

I think this franchise should stop chasing what it was that Pronger brought as that shipped has sailed also.

Many franchises across sports have been undone by trying to find the next "INSERT GREAT PLAYER'S NAME HERE", and they just come up empty.

I would rather the Flyers try to take stock of what they have now, make the best of it, and move forward.

- johndewar

I understand being frustrated about that kind of thinking. But forgetting all about trying to replace Pronger per se, if you have a chance of getting a 28 yr old, proven top point producing d man who also has size and strong physical play, I think you keep your eyes open and strike if the deal is there and it is fairly/reasonable. There are only a precious few D men in the NHL today who can produce as well as bring the physical game (at his size) like Buff, so it's more about obtaining one of the top assets in the league as opposed to chasing yesterday's great players imo.

He should have gone into the hard areas. Can't win in the playoffs without going to the hard areas.

I don't consider him a top asset. But part of that may be unending hatred for every member of the 2010 Chicago Blackhawks. That's doubly true for Kris "Mouthpiece" Versteeg.

IF THE FLYERS ALREADY HAVE A NEED FOR A 3RD LINE PLAYER, AND THEY TRADE ANOTHER 3RD LINE PLAYER, HOW MANY 3RD LINE PLAYERS WILL THEY NEED?

1st grade math MJL. Can you figure it out?

If you flip to the back of the book it tells you the answer is 2.

- youarewrong

This perceived need is not a part of the trade you proposed.

Never realized they had 3.

BTW I heard the reason Hartnell was struggling was because he cut his hair...
