You know, as the Cap goes up, 5M for a player is going to become middle ground. As long as Streit doesn't fall off a cliff with his play, the contract isn't a big deal.
- MJL

I don't mind the Streit deal if he stays healthy, but it would be a bad use of resources to also trade multiple forwards for Yandle when they are both very similar players.

Interesting when you look at what a lot of the issues with this team have been since the "new nhl", that they all stem from management.

Off for the night hooligans.

Goodnight, and good hockey

I hear you. I really want the next defenseman the Flyers acquire to be a solid two way guy. Closer to a Timonen type versus a Yandle type. That would allow the Flyers to tweak the mix, and add even further mobility to the lineup. Rather then having 3 stay at home types in Schenn, Grossmann, and Coburn. I think that's where the issue is.

I'd like the mix to be 4 mobile two way players, and 2 defensive physical stay at home types.

Or since they have Streit, 3 mobile two way players, Streit, and the 2 defensive stay at home types.

I personally think the "C" is overrated. You don't have to have a letter on your sweater to lead. And far too much is made out of it, and the effect on teams.
- MJL

i agree with this so much. a lot of times the C is given to one of the better players on the team, seemingly simply because. leadership can come from the gritty, workman guys like kimmo timonen or billy guerin just as easily as it can come from the person who garners the most media attention

Just wondering: Right now who is an attainable two way guy? I agree with you that we need that kind of guy but I think we are going to have to get him through the draft.

Nah, Campbell's deal is a monster. I'd do it if only $1 mil came back, though. But one of (if not the) top young goalie under the age of 25 in Markstrom, one of the top puck moving Dmen in the league for $4 mil per year in Campbell, Seth Jones, and a very good chance at a top 15 pick next year seems like a very good deal for G.
- JAKEw1234

I agree. Nobody is untradable and I might have pulled the trigger with Florida to set the franchise up for a long time. I would've wanted $$ coming back so that Campbell's contract was the similar in AAV+ to Streit.

Well that's the problem. Defenseman are a tough commodity these days to acquire.

Amen. We either need to draft one or Jay Feaster to trade us one. Given the Flyers track record with defensive draft picks I think I am going to put my eggs in a "Jay Feaster" or "Mike Millbury" trade blunder

Or you roll the dice on a guy that may have fallen out of favor. If the Leaf have soured on Gardiner, and he's not too pricey, take a shot. Check out cap strapped teams, see if something budges there.

Maybe there's a team that would be willing to move a good young puck mover to get more grit or size on their blue line, in the form of Coburn or Grossmann.

Ya, but thats why i dont think this deal was real, its probably just a fairy tale. The deal seems too good to be true. We'd have 2 (or 3 depending on where that other 1st wouldve been) potential franchise players coming our way plus a top puck mover at a drastically slashed price. Too good to be true, I call BS.

if the leafs would move gardiner for a realistic price, i think hes worth a shot for most any team to try a reclaimation project on. still far too early to give up on that talent. although i dont know if id put him in that solid two way category yet though. ive mainly seen offensive puck moving flair from him. which is good, but i got the impression he was talking about trying to acquire a guy who didnt fit so neatly onto either side of the puckmoving/stay at home fence.

Right now though, that two way guy that can step right in is going to cost a ton. They might not be able to get a two way guy, and might have to land one that needs work on his game.

oh i totally agree. which is why i was curious to hear who people had in mind as that two way guy that isnt like a super stud. i consider myself to have a fairly decent grasp on guys around the league, and im having a tough time coming up with a list of names. was interested in hearing suggestions and how people view different guys

Right now, I'd like to see how the current group responds to the coaching/systemic changes, before running out and making a trade. I do feel that adding mobility on defense is a need, but my biggest issues with Laviolette were the misuse of a lot of players and failure to adapt better to his roster.

You can't run and gun with this crew. You have to adjust the breakout, you have to demand better two way play from the forwards, more discipline in their transitional game and better puck support. I'm just hoping Berube can get it done.

But until he tries, it's hard to say for sure what fits and what don't

i totally agree. there definitely is more juice to squeeze from this group than being shown. a new outlook and usage philosophy may change that. better support from forwards is a definite must, although when does the line appear that such a highly paid defense should be able to excel in at least some aspects on its own merit?

Valid point...a lot of overspending was the result of the Pronger injury, because of that Grossmann was acquired. Of course, Meszaros' addition came before that, so it's definitely not something that is totally born out of Pronger getting hurt.

Because most flyers Fan overrate g. I wouldn't be shocked if he never hits 90 point season again. Yes he's good and yes he can dominate at times but maybe we need to consider his 90 point season was a top season for him. Remember briere hit 90 points once in buffalo and never again.

Hartnell and Simmonds to go to the net more, and the players need to worry about doing their own jobs on the ice, not other guys'. Now let's see it in-game.

They need to move their (frank)ing feet. Watch any other team and they are always moving.
