The professional lightning rod is one of the most important positions on the Leafs.

Seriously, though, this is why I argue in favor of keeping Phaneuf. He can take the heat while playing effectively. That's a rare breed.

Option A: Put an unreasonable amount of pressure on young players, expecting them to perform at an elite level 100% of the time.

Option B: Identify a weakness in a player and ride them into the dirt. When a player falters even slightly in Toronto, they're like a wounded deer stumbling into a pack of wolves.

What about Option C: They are rushed to the NHL to0 quickly & this hampers their development. They lose confidence too quickly & cannot deal with it. Some of the jaded yougnsters get lucky & get a second chance else where, where they begin to excel. Other youngsters don't get so lucky. their careers just vanish into the dark night & no one ever hears of them again.
