Anyone that watched the team last year knew there were issues with the coach. Or this preseason. Hell, the GM was repeatedly asked last year if Laviolette was on the hot seat.

Even if you disagree that he should have been fired, you had to recognize that he was at least on thin ice.

- Jsaquella

Everyone who follows the NHL had him as one of the top two coaches on the hot seat. A 1-5-1 preseason record and an 0-3 reg season lethargic start meant he had to go. I wasn't shocked at all, and I think the coach has been tuned out.

Beginning tonight we'll see if it was the coach or not. If the team comes out flying and looks like the team we thought they'd be for the rest of the season, no one will complain.

That's definitely true. Not often you see the Phillies GM call Jim Salisbury an bumhole
- Jsaquella

I think the writers for the Flyers are the ones who stir the pot the most. They ask ridiculous questions and, often, in a rude way.

Phillies media is fairly passive. They don't push buttons too often, but don't necessarily ask the tough questions.

Eagles writers are actually pretty good about asking questions. Their interpretations of the answers are usually wrong. They take a response and spin it into something else.

Sixers writers are compiled of about 3 people and there really aren't tough questions to ask at this point.

That's because they only look at the team in terms of the big picture. They see the big events, but nothing leading up to it.

They don't understand that the team was going nowhere with Laviolette. They think it's just a rough patch of hockey to start the season. They think the Flyers will fire coaches after every 3 game losing streak.

Real fans understand that this team looked exactly like the team that struggled last year. It wasn't the lockout or the injuries.

- PhillySportsGuy

People that follow the team closely get this.

People that parachute in once in a while to come up with a sweeping statement about the team do not and will not.

I'm not saying everything this franchise does is great, because they are flawed like any sports franchise.

But anyone that acts surprised by the firing hasn't been paying attention.

It wasn't just the record. It was the way they played. Snyder was right when he said the team was lifeless and it was one of the worst camps he'd ever seen.

They allowed the first goal in every game except the season opener.

Agreed. If they start turning it around it's a moot point. I hope that it was just the coach. I don't think it was, but, I do think they have enough talent to be a good team.

Hockey is treated as the red-headed stepchild in this city. It's still a big fanbase, but in terms of popularity, it's behind college basketball. The Eagles are easy to write about, because football is a fairly east game to gauge. Plus there's about 50 Eagles-related articles a day, during the offseason. With hockey, it's more fun to blame goalies make coaches inept, and treat every 2-game scoring slump like a grand regression. Any chance to put down the Flyers is pounced upon as soon as it's presented.

haha, true.

I think the bad path today started with Angelo's convoluted view on the world. I liked that Keith Jones stood up to him.

Then Ike Reese's very oddly overbearing and annoying stance on Vick vs Foles.

And then this latest with Macnow.

I usually leave WIP on in the background at work. I pay attention about 10% of the time what's being said but I have to turn it off right now.

I tend to like Macnow but I think he's off, I feel like everyone is off on this. I feel like the real fans knew this firing was coming for a while and after seeing what we've seen in the preseason and early games, are actually relieved to see some change.

I don't want to believe that this team isn't good, I'm so tired of hearing people say that. They haven't been playing good but I think they can.

Sorry, little rant there.

He has. I spent a little time listening today and the whole conversation was about whether there is a qb controversy. How can that be a discussion? It wasn't about a qb controversy. It was about whether there should be one!

All that needed to be said was "Players lose their jobs during injury all the time. If the backup plays better than the starter, than why shouldn't he be the starter. It happened with Tom Brady and it happened with Kurt Warner"

That's it. Done. Nothing else to discuss.

- PhillySportsGuy

WIP's job is to stir up controversy and then dismiss it as a non-issue.

"So, what do you think guys, should Michael Vick get another chance after fumbling 7 times last week? Let us know your thoughts."

"Yo man, you gotsta give Vick another chance. I mean, that line ain't givin him nothin, so of course he gotta run. Nick Foles ain't gonna do no better."

"How can you even consider Michael Vick as a starter? It's gotta be Foles, end of discussion."

"THAT'S RIGHT CUZ, AWESOME!"

I disagree. I think Football is difficult to gauge for the average fan. People blame the secondary for passing touchdowns when, in reality, it's also the defensive line getting NO pass rush.

I think it's similar to hockey fans blaming the defenseman when, in reality, it's the forwards not back checking or helping enough.

And of course blaming the quarterback for everything is like blaming the goalie. Without a good team in front of them, they will not take you far in the playoffs.

I said the same thing yesterday and I will continue to defend it today. I think our players are talented and they have enough for a winning team. I don't think Lavi's system was great for these players and they finally got frusterated with it. I do believe after about 10-15 games we will see the new system played without any kinks, and that should tell us how good the team really is.

I agree. I used to like certain people, but it's gotten so bad. Everything is so dramatized. It's become like ESPN. Whatever happened to just good sports discussion without all the drama?

Can we discuss something else besides the same story lines of the quarterback?

I don't think they ever really caught on to the system. It seemed like they were constantly confused. Being in a system for this long, they should know exactly where to go with the puck when they get it.

There are times they win board battles but have no outlet to pass to. What's the point in winning a board battle only to turn around and have another defender right there to knock the puck away.

It's not only about winning battles but which side to win them to and where to go with the puck when you win them.

It actually never happened. Only people in Philadelphia give their best players mock cheers. Ungrateful bastards.

It's true. And I for one think the reputation is a bit undeserved.

Now if you'll excuse me a moment, I'm going to eat lunch, delicious puppy steaks marinaded in baby tears and served over a bed of rice and kitten paws.

I don't think it was all the coach either. Or all Bryz last year. We have some of the parts to be a contender, but deep down I think Homer knows we're not there. At the very least the moves he made over the summer weren't the trade prospects and picks for short term go for it players. What we spent was money and cap space to at least try to make the team competitive to make the playoffs.
