I have been pleasantly surprised at Shawn Gates' Rambling NHL Ramblings blog. It's terrific.

Definitely worth a read boys.

I look at the Sharks as a potential for Edmonton and a few years and wonder what would happen if we spent all this time and never could win, how would fans take it.

My question to you is are you okay with being competitive year in and year out. Or would you rather see the Sharks shake things up, not knowing if you will be able to make it over that hump or end up taking a step back?

I would shake things up as early as 2-3 years ago. Again, as a fan you always would rather see your team do well even in a regular season. But, as I said in my previous post, we have seen this movie too many times: Sharks look terrific early on, then something always happens in the playoffs. It's not a specific set of circumstances, it's the team, the team has not been good enough.
So back to your original question, I guess the answer depends on what your goal is. If it is to create excitement in the area and sell tickets then Wilson hardly needs to change anything - he has done a terrific job. If your goal is to win the Cup then yes, I would shake things up and would have done so a few years ago. This core has had enough chances in the playoffs and proved that they cannot get it done when it really matters.

And I don't think the Sharks are a laughing stock around the NHL, they were able to create a very solid franchise for a non-traditional hockey market. However, they are not feared around the league and a lot of times aren't even being taken seriously once the playoffs roll around. That's the sad reality but until they win something this will not change. So let's wait till April.

Which leads me to part 2, are you really willing to go though that?

I mean the odds aren't in your favour to get better. The odds are that in 3 years from now you are going to end up with goals that are less than where you are now.

Can you live with that?

I just ask the question as we heard a lot of "I can deal with the rebuilding as it will mean winning" or " lets step back in re-tool and we will be better", but months not years later people get pissed off at how bad their team looks.

I am not speaking on behalf of all the Sharks fans but me personally, yes, I could live with results as long as I could see the team was headed in the right direction. Yes, Edmonton example is a bad one but there are a number of teams in the last decade that went through shakeup/rebuild a lot quicker and have been very successful in the playoffs.
