Has anyone else noticed how good Phaneuf has looked in the first few games this year? It seems like he always get's off to a good start and then falters but he seems to have a little bit more than the last couple years. Probably really motivated to play himself into a great contract but props to him, the thing I've noticed most is that he's been good defensively.

Gunnarsson healthy and playing a quiet, unassuming game helps immensely. Last year was a revolving door of Kostka and Holzer and I think he was always trying to do too much.

I had to miss the game but in the Game in 6 I noticed they showed him break up a 2 on 1 pretty handily at a key point in the game. Good on him.

I'm generally against moving young talent for guys over 30, especially when that talent can one day win a Norris trophy if we don't ruin him. God I hope this Gardiner talk is just talk.
- MapleLeafsFTW

Yup, who remembers a young rookie Leaf d man Randy Carlyle in the late 70's? He played only 94 games over 2 seasons when he was stupidly dealt to the Penguins. Carlyle went on to win a Norris. Bottom line, never give up on a young d man with lots of upside.

All HNIC said was teams are calling. They are doing so because they saw what Gardiner can do in the playoffs. Not many young D-men have his puck-moving ability.

I doubt the Leafs are going to rush to trade him. He's not going anywhere right now.

A lot of that has to do with him playing too much. The Leafs are burning him out.

That would be hilarious if he gets traded back to the Ducks. That was the reason he was traded for Beauchemin (along with Lupul) was because Carlyle thought Jake wasn't the best defender.

The real reason is like had Shultz and liked him better. Whoops.

If we're going to take on a big contract, I'd rather pass on Bogosian. He's crappy defensively.

Agreed. Unless Nonis gets blown away with an offer for Gardiner, he simply won't trade him at this present time.

Leafs would be idiots to trade Gardiner. I hate how he was the biggest thing coming to Toronto, but with Rielly now the biggest thing to come to Toronto, Gardiner is expendable.

How long before the novelty wears off with Kadri, and he's expendable? When Gauthier comes to town?

If they had more cap space going forward he stays. With the cap space and FAs coming up the next 2 years, it makes sense to look at Reilly to be that guy if he works out. Gardner gone after 10 games...

I think what Leafs are lacking is a behemoth d man. What about a blockbuster trade like Buffalo's Tyler Myers to TO for Gardner plus something else? Sabres offense desperatley needs a spark. Leafs have Reilly so they would be alright.

I think Phaneuf has more reason to worry than Gardiner. Have Gardiner & Rielly in the 1st & 2nd pairings with Franson & Gardiner on extensions using the cash saved when Dion goes UFA. I like Dion but he's not worth 6.5+. Go with the kids imo

Myers has been horrible and does not play like a behemoth.

A few years ago all the Sabre fans were sure he was the next Chara, I am sooooo glad that didnt happen!

Anything involving Tyler Myers would not count as a blockbuster. Guy has turned out to be a bust either because of the way he's been coached or how he's progressed. He doesn't lay huge hits like his size would lead you to believe, doesn't play well in his own zone like his size would lead you to believe, and he shoots right into the shins of defenders on the PP he's supposed to be quarterbacking.

No thanks to Myers. Guy's turned out horrible for what he was "supposed" to be.

If I was GM I'm with you, just don't think thats the way it goes down. It is interesting that RC has given up pairing him with kids anymore, it's now Franson dealing with it. Moving Dion in the long term makes the most sense. No chance he signs for less than 7, meaning their cap is even more bunked after next year. Like how he's played for the most part so far but he cap is the cap.

Mabie Carlyle can get him on the right track. I was looking at the Leafs cap salary. No way to fit Myers on the current team. Mabie at the of the season, if the Leafs cannot re-sgn Dion, than a trade for Myers would make more sense.
