To be fair, clip ~$5m out for Pronger's salary, they're going to use that LTIR every year until his contract is done. But the dollars are very high given the product, for sure. They can get by with this corps for now (if coaching can get the team defense on track, even to some degree) I think, but on the middle and long term they're going to need something. Especially once Timonen is finally done, they're going to need a keystone defender to hold things together.

I think the writing is on the wall for Holmgler. I expect he'll be gone by June.

I get the adding Pronger's salary to the equation makes it that way, but extending an aging Dman like Timonen, who isn't that good anymore and paying him 6 million and giving Streit 5 million were absolute jokes.

At least Timonen was for one year. That Streit deal is absurd.

You're right, even without counting Pronger's money the dollars are very high. Six of our top seven defenders make over $3m.

The Timonen money is fine in my book, it's only a one year commitment to satisfy short term need. The Streit contract just seems like making up for letting our only remaining puck mover in Matt Carle walk, along with preparing to lose Timo next year. I'm not a fan of those years for a 35+ guy. Still, he's got a shot and brings elements the Flyers sorely lacked, so I don't completely hate the signing.

Even being 100% optimistic, the Flyers blueline is an expensive project that needs a big move to truly fix. I wish we were in a position to complain about something like the Letang extension, like in here over the summer.

I think with the players we have on D on the ice, on the bench and in Wilkes Barre we have the horses. And Jaques seems to have them thinking much smarter in their own end. You can see a better urgency and breakout set up when we get the puck it gets out, quickly. That may not seem like a big change but it the little stuff that can kill you. The play is so fast.

I think it's best exemplified by the accuracy of their 1st pass. It's been a LONG time since I saw this team making 1st passes that clean and precise this early into the season.

Though that also extends to the forwards passing too. Their passing has been clean and precise as well. I haven't seen the lazy "it'll get there eventually, or in the general vicinity" passes at all yet so far. And I think it's indicative of a commitment to doing all of those little things right that maybe will help them be a better team later. I just hope they keep it up by the time the playoffs come around and they don't get into the bad habits of the past like expecting to win on skill instead of effort and details.

Holmgren blows $39M on two years of Bryz, gives a cup winner half their core, and trades JVR for a pylon, but its Lavi that gets fired?

Bylsma was voted smartest coach in a players poll other notable winners were Dion for most overrated, Henrik was second, and Cooke won dirtiest player in a land slide.

Fair enough.

But I haven't seen the patented lazy drop pass or the "just kinda throw it over there with as little effort as required" passes in the offensive zone either. And neither of them were really Letang specialities. Letangs favorite was the D-to-D pass in the offensive zone that was half drop pass and half "just leave it and let the trailer grab it" pass.

I'm only half serious. I agree, the team is playing a hell of alot more responsible as a whole. Now if Letang buys in we'll really be onto something.

The point is, if you are going to sign a dman for 5 million, you might as well kept Carle than give it to Streit. I share Carle's alma mater, Denver, but I think he is a somewhat flawed player. That said, he is more worth 5 million than Streit.

Oh, I know. But Letang did have his lazy passing moments and as long as he buys in once he's back on the ice, then I can see it really working out well. The attention to detail and giving effort is I think the one thing that's been missing from this team since 2009.

And maybe I'm wrong, but I thought that it was 08 and 09 that the Pens went to West Point during preseason. And then they didn't go again until this year. So maybe it's a coincidence that they're being more responsible, but I kinda think those team-building trips for them really seem to make a big difference.

I'm not disagreeing. But at the same time, they couldn't hop in the time machine and undo the previous offseason this summer (new CBA forbids this). I'd more than likely trade Streit's shot for Carle's youth and more rounded game. As far as soft puck movers go, Carle was decent in his own zone.

Either way, the Flyers need a top defenseman in the worst kind of way. I don't see that player becoming available soon, either.

Give it a little time the Sabers will be unloading soon enough.
