Every team has flaws. It's the job of the coach to hide those flaws and to fix them if teams begin to expose those flaws. That is why Lavi is to blame for this. He just never adjusted.

Now, if Berube impliments a system where the defense isn't expected to move the puck, just to shut down the defense. Meaning the forwards are going to have to be more of a backchecking and carry the puck and dump and chase, then the Defense is fine. If they impliment a system where the forwards can use thier size and speed to dump and chase and cycle, instead of passing into open shooting lanes, then this could be a high scoring team.

The point is, the team isnt bad. They just need to adjust to their flaws, not play into them.

- youarewrong

But what you're saying doesn't add up for a 30 team league in which every year, there are bad teams.

Sometimes, it's your team that's bad. Bad player fits, aging players, injuries, whatever. But sometimes it's your turn.

Saying that the coach can hide all player flaws isn't realistic -- somebody's going to finish in 30th place, every year.

just catching up on everything ... can anyone clue me in on Berube's system and/or approach? I assume it's more defensive-oriented, but that's obviously an over simplification.
- FlyerGuy

Skate harder, Compete Harder, play a team game, play team defense and win games 1-0 if they have to.

Berube only has coached a little more than a year at the AHL level. I don' t think any of us know what his system/beliefs are at this point.

Things can't get worse, so I would assume the fact the coach was just fired would light a fire under the player's asses at first.

He replaces Lavi's jam with some punch.

I guess I'm tired from hearing from all the WIP fans that just happened to stop by the site today. Not that "Allin" is one of them, but this entire feeling like the team sux, crappy defense, no scoring, bad goaltending..... blah blah blah. Its Negadelphia jumping on the woe's of this team. Can't crap on the Eagles or Phillies right now, so lets Crap on the Flyers....

The team doesn't suck. It might have been mis-managed. It might have lost its compete.... But it doesn't suck. If you really think it sucks then go away. Go watch the Blackhawks, or Penguins. Then when we are a playoff team again.. be it this yaer or next, then you can come back. We are used to it.

I am fully confident that this team can compete under a new system.

- youarewrong

Um, they're 0-3, have scored 3 goals while giving up 9, and generally played poorly.

Thus far, they have sucked.

It doesn't have to be a permanent situation, though. There is more than enough time to get going in the right direction.

Not sure why Snider is blasting the Flyers camp as being the worst he has ever seen.
Does he have to try and torpedo Laviolette the day he fires the guy? Geez....

The problem is more this one: Meszaros/Grossmann is a pairing that you simply cannot have in this league today, if your second pairing is Streit-Schenn.

Neither Mesaros or Grossmann's puck retrieval or puck carrying is sufficient to allow them to play together. At a minimum, you have to split them up.

- AllInForFlyers

that's 2 3rd pairings. gotta work more mobility into the mix

See, that's what I'm saying: The players don't look good. Blame Peter Laviolette for whatever makes any one person happy, but there are plenty of players who are either effort-deficient or skill-deficient, and that shows up on the scoreboard.
- AllInForFlyers

I can give you effort deficient but I cant give you skill deficient. This is a skilled group. Voracek, Giroux, and Lecavalier are top caliber players in this league. Simmonds, Hartnell, Read are top notch secondary scoring. Couturier & Schenn are future players that still play a positive role. Talbot, Hall, Rinaldo are very good energy line players.

As far as defense, yes they lack in puck moving. But as a whole, you have a very solid set of defenseman.

I'm sure he didn't say it without reason ... he's been around for a 100 years, so he probably knows a good camp when he sees one.

Exactly -- it's not a crime to be a slower player, or be on the third pairing. But we have to acknowledge these limitations and do SOMETHING.

Let me start off by saying that this man will be a great NHL coach some day soon.

Now, I'm excited with Berube as our coach. I'm excited with Lappy as our assistant. I like the emphasis right now being placed on team defense as well as correcting our other problems. if I'm not mistaken, I saw earlier on the board someone criticizing Homer for making the move so soon, when they were just yesterday calling for Laviolette to be fired. To people with that mindset, wow. The players had a wakeup meeting today at 1:30. There are rumors of Curtis Glencross being traded here. I like what's happening today. I think we're headed in the right direction, despite Willie still being an AHL coach Get excited boys and girls, The Flyers are forcing a turnaround in their game, instead of just waiting for it. Can't wait for tomorrows game.

First, just because you think a team sucks, doesn't mean you won't root for them. An example would be this year's Sixers. I am a Sixers' fan, but they will suck big time.

Second, I don't think he's saying they suck. I think the point is the team is flawed. The defenseman lack mobility, puck handling and passing as a whole.

I believe some of this can be rectified with a change in system allowing players to have easier outlets to move the puck. I also think the team (especially the forwards) lack confidence. You'd be amazed what a change in confidence can do for a young team.

- PhillySportsGuy

Another example would be the Leafs throughout my entire childhood.

Ok. Does he have to make that opinion public?

Here is a poll question.

Which even will happen next?

A. Flyers win the Cup
B. Laviolette wins the Cup

I...don't think I am prepared to argue this further, in this regard: I need to see what adjustments Craig Berube makes.

I'm hopeful that there are some positive results. But I'm not betting on them, because I don't think the Flyers are as talented as we have thought.

But we'll see, starting tomorrow night -- and tomorrow night isn't the answer, either way. It's just a start.

You're obviously not familiar with the common Philadelphia fan. If you've won your most recent game, you're destined for the championship. If you've lost your most recent game, you are going to finish in last place. And if you're the Sixers, you get a gold star for trying.

meh, he was asked some hard questions, and rightly so, and felt the need to explain himself. Personally, I like his bluntness .. and openness.

I don't think he's undercutting Lavy's chances of getting another job. If anything, other teams might think the crazy Flyers just fired another good coach, and some team might be interviewing him in the coming weeks.

Hard to do a rebuild with all of the multi-year deals and NMCs they have. They're built to win now.

I think Laviolette will get another job, and in short order. I just don't think you need to pile on when the guy hasn't even finished cleaning his desk out.

All that had to be said was simply, we don't like how the team has played and we decided a coaching change was necessary.

Quote from Berube (D Isaac article in CP):

"You want score more goals? Do your job without the puck," Berube said. "Put yourself in a position to defend and you’ll get turnovers and more opportunities the other way."

I like how that sounds. And I'm sure people here agrees since I've heard that same sentiment here quite a lot. At least it's a start.

Thats fine. I can give you they have been out competed. I can even give you that the team as it sits might not gel well. But the talent is there IMO. Just need to get them to buy into the right system.
