Lack of scoring talent is not why they aren't scoring. That thought today was echoed by the new Coach, and what his feelings are, as to why they're not scoring.

You keep right on thinking that.

I forgot Hitchcock was here further back than I thought, but a defensive minded coach eventually to Lavy is a complete opposite in philosophy, system, & culture

they really don't seem to have one plan, unless it works immediately, then it's switch things up again.

Equally shocking is that the wasted no time in handing Berube a multi year deal already before he's coached one game?

- puckhead17

I haven't see any information on the specifics of Berube's contract.

Yeah. Thanks, MJL. Your team assessments are like gold with me. I can't believe I'd question your wisdom after you said this team has plenty of scoring talent, after they've scored a whopping one even-strength goal in three games.

Can't believe I'd question your wisdom. Silly me.

More like I'm amazed people keep trying to tell me how a team that hasn't scored for an entire 48-game short season, a preseason, and three games of a regular season is now, all of a sudden, this offensive juggernaut that's going to be unleashed because they haven't competed in all this time.

Datsyuk, Alfredsson, BrindAmour, Jagr, Iginla, Elias, Doan...

But of course you are going by the career of a tiny, finesse forward who suffered multiple concussions.

- Feanor

Alfredsson, Jagr, Iginla and Doan are super productive and worth $5M+/year?

Elias you can make an argument for.

Brind'Amour was making a very modest $3.6M/year and retired with term left on his deal after a really sharp decline.

per Bill's column

The Flyers announced this morning that Peter Laviolette has been fired as the Flyers' head coach. Craig Berube has been named the new head coach. It is NOT an interim title. The Flyers have agreed to a multi-year deal with Berube

what does this say?
what if Berube goes 2-10?
will they be paying a 3rd head coach this season?

Not sure that he even got a new contract, per se. He already had a deal in place as an asst... they might have just given him a pay raise throughout the remaining term, or tacked on an extra year or something.

Honestly, I'm still not convinced he's not actually on a 79-game audition.

For those who responded to my question of what has happened...

Not to get too sappy on ourselves, but its kind of sad to me a little.

At this point, I dont care who is on the team, who the coach is, whatever. The time has come to restore the once proud identity and reputation of this franchise.

They have turned into a bit of a laughing stock, and as a fan, I want to be reminded once again, why I chose to cheer for this team.

Seems like a bit of an exaggeration, but in any case, what's curious then is what accounts for the differences between the 2011-2012 team and this current team. The 2011-2012 team had no problems scoring. When looking at the personnel, not much has changed since then. I think it would be foolish to claim that Matt Carle and Jagr are the reason the team has regressed since then. Maybe 2011-2012 was a fluke year in terms of offense.

Last year, they Flyers were 9th in the NHL in goals scored.

The scoring "troubles" last season were largely at 5 on 5, and most of that was due to a horrible transitional game. That was why I wanted Laviolette fired last year. They made few coaching adjustments to correct the issue, but the issue wasn't scoring in the zone, it was getting into the zone.

This season, they look like they're not even trying hard. They looked very listless and are getting badly outworked. Last year they seemed to be working to me, but wasted a lot of energy just trying to get out of their own end.

This year, I don;t even see the effort.

That's how the game works. If you don't compete, and spend too much time playing in your own end, you won't score. The Flyers have one of the deeper forward corps in the League.

They have a point a game player in Giroux, who scored 48 pts in 48 games last year. And 93 pts the Season before that.

They have Voracek, who scored 22 goals last year in 48 games and scored at nearly a point per game pace with 46 pts in 48 games.

They have Scott Hartnell, who has 2 30 goal Seasons to his credit. Including 37 goals in 11/12 and led the League in PP goals.

The have a proven veteran scorer in Lecavalier to anchor the 2nd line. '

They have Wayne Simmonds who scored at a 25 goal pace last year, and scored 28 goals the Season before.

They have Matt Read, who scored at a 21 goal pace last Season, and had 24 goals the Season before.

This doesn't include any secondary offense that Coutureir, Schenn, and Talbot can provide.

Not to mention that they have top proven point producers on the defensive end in Timonen and Streit.

I think they will be jettisoning several players that were untouchable a few months ago if they poop the bed with Berube as the coach.

All that I've heard from the Flyers is that he was not given the interim tag, and his contract was an internal matter.

There was a report out that he agreed to take over, but that they hadn't actually signed a deal as yet. That was around 3 PM

Even if Coots doesnt develop an offensive game, I really do wish they keep him.

Its always nice to have a solid shutdown center for the 3rd line, and one that doesnt have a $5million salary.
