Not just that, there's only a handful of games. If you win the gold, you may play 8 games. When you play for the Cup, you must make the playoffs, over an 82 game schedule. Then you have to win 16 playoff games, to win the Cup. Toughest trophy in sports to win. You have to have talent, determination and toughness, to survive this test of endurance. The Olympics and World Juniors is a 2 week tournament.

Here are my suggestions on this issue:

1. Get rid of the instigator penalty, this will help with players having to be accountable for their actions.

2. Don't allow holding onto the other guys jersey in a fight, make it a game misconduct if it happens. Making it two minutes does nothing as is the case with the new rule about taking off your helmet, if both guys do it then it will just even out. Make it a game misconduct and they will take a different action during the fight, if they even choose to fight.

3. Hand out game misconducts for staged fights.

4. Get a visor that allows you to easily pop it off if you are going to fight that way they can keep their helmets on.

I have played hockey at a competitive level and believe that fighting keeps guys in check on the ice, for the most part. I have been in the stands at junior and NHL games and have always seen the crowd go nuts every time there is a fight. Its only after a major injury that the crowd goes quiet but if its a good clean fight, the crowd is pretty pumped up.

I am no problem with toughness. But, why is there so little fighting in the playoffs then?

Soccer isn't the most popular sport on the planet or anything.

So which sport do you prefer?

still is fighting. it decreases, but it's still there. Every sport changes in the playoffs. A big reason is there is not as much dirty stuff in the playoffs, teams can't afford to take penalties. IN the season, it doesn't matter as much, so there's more fighting to keep the dirty plays down

You're kidding right? Take a look at the Canadian team rosters from 2002-present, there are many NHL players on those teams, some are full of NHL players.

I agree with you on this but the Memorial Cup is also a difficult one to win.

There are other teams than Canada, and Canada certainly doesn't win every year as we know.

You may want to look at Mr. Price SV% in that series.

Like I said, I have no problem with functional toughness, every team would kill to have Milan Lucic, but do I think fighting is essential to winning? No way. Look at Detroit this last decade.

Check out the other teams rosters then. The names might not have the star power that the Canadian ones do but they have played in the NHL and most players in those tournaments have been drafted already unless we are talking about Denmark or Germany.

Actually I attended some world jr womens games while they were in Ottawa and area, it was entertaining hockey.

But I'm sure you're the pinnacle of masculinty and heterosexuality so I wouldn't want to dimish that by expecting you to check it out.

It is, so is the women's nation program but its not the NHL. If you don't want to watch hockey with fighting go watch college or womens hockey.

I am pretty sure that taking fighting out of hockey will not only help keep the players safer, but it will draw a bigger crowd to the sport.

The idea of fighting was created in a league where players had to fend for themselves. In today's hockey there is video reviews and evidence that will allow for suspensions and fines to be handed out to the players.

If the NHL safety committee actually stepped up and did its job they would be able to get rid of cheap plays in hockey. Sure some plays happen spur of the moment at very fast paces, but these are the same type of plays that will happen regardless of the opposing teams enforcer. If a player received a 5 game suspension for every time he blatantly took his stick and two handed a player, players would never swing. Either suspensions should be long or players should be fined significant amounts. Receiving a 1 or 2 game suspension for trying to chop someone's leg off with your stick is just a slap on the wrist. Why would that make the game safer?

Once these stiffer regulations come into play fighting will be completely unnecessary. Than the sport will be able to finally put true talent on the ice.

Imagine a sport where you have to match up your scoring and defense for 4 competitive lines. A sport where you need to maximize talent up and down the lineup without having employ goons on your opponents. Where teams would have to choose to draft talented defensive players or go for 4 straight scoring lines. Teams would change, the dynamic would change and the true potential of the game could be brought onto the ice.

Plus I wouldn't have to watch a bunch of 12 year olds push each other around and call each other names after every scoring chance where a player gets close to a goalie.

I enjoy skill more than fighting, the best skill is in the NHL. Therefore, I enjoy the NHL the most. Do I turn off the TV when Orr and Kassian have a fight? No, but I am mostly bored by it.
