What if he decides he really doesn't want to play in Jersey, and leaves in two years?
- Pete V

Jersey goes to Seattle? Or Brodeur comes out of retirement. Or they Sign Dipietro and get him a robot body.

Personally I think we'll be fine and quite capable of moving forward with long term contracts given out like 8 million a year for Hank, 6 million a year for Cally, 5 million a year for Girardi.

I definitely think the cap is going up and we'll be just fine

What if he backstops the team to a playoff berth where they would otherwise have no business in being in which attracts UFAS

No, what I am saying is that if you would prefer to have the Pens/Hawks type model, you can't pay Ryan Callahan $6 million a year, because that would prevent you from loading up on superstars to mask deficiencies in net. You need to put the puck in the net with that model, and you need to have cap space available to make that happen.

That's all I am saying.

Now, tell me how you would use the money saved on Hank to make the team better, and who you would put in net.

You are telling us why it can't work with Hank, but not what the solution is.

- Pete V

I'm not advocating bringing superstars, that doesn't necessarily work. Besides, it's not realistic. I'd rather have a team full of Ryan Callalhan's on it, and let the chips fall where they may, than having a team who hopes their goalie stands on his head for 82 games, plus another 28 to win a cup. That's why I'd have Krieder here, and say go skate don't worry about mistakes, play your game, score some goals.

We shouldn't have any problems resigning the entire team next summer. With Richards getting bought out, and an estimated $3M cap growth, thats $9.6M extra space we will have to address raises to all current salaries. Now I doubt we will keep everyone if we don't win the cup, changes will be made, but they won't be because we can't shell out the capspace.

but who is the goalie if we let Hank walk?

at least when the Rangers let Giacomin go they did it because they had JD ready for the job

Just gotta hope Richards doesn't blow out a knee or something late in the season. That would suck

That really is the key question, right?

Because you would have to overpay to get some veteran UFA goalie anyway, so how much good does it do you to try to save the money on Hank?

And, they haven't drafted a potential replacement either. Maybe we can bring Mike Dunham out of retirement.

they traded a lot to get the mediocre Mike Dunham

they also wasted two first round picks trying to figure out the goalie situation

You could pluck one of Reimer or Bernier from Toronto next year.

Its a risk for sure but the odds are in your favor he will make it though unscathed and you will be able to buy him out in the offseason

I am curious what the Rangers will do when both Cally and Hagelin are healthy. I think Fast might come out but don't think Miller will lose his spot. He is gonna be a huge contributor to this team. Richards might play himself out of the lineup by game 10.

That is a possible path as well. Or, I guess you could trade Lundqvist to the Wings for Jimmy Howard plus, or something like that. But, the question always comes down to whether you would be better situated by doing that.

Even the mid-range goalies end up getting paid north of $5 million, so what would the Rangers really be gaining by going that route? And extra $3-4 million of cap space to spend on who?

For the record. Im not PRO trade Hank. I think he stays and is worth every penny given to him.

What if Hank and Cally leaves? Speculation is fine on message boards but it's just banter at the end of the day. People act like Nj never signs or retains top end players. Schneider is from MA, and wants a starting position for big money. He'll get both if he stays. No guarantee he'll stay but you guys are acting like he is already gone.

If Hank walks, you gotta go after either Gibson or Fasth. Anaheim can't use both of them. Gibson would be perfect. I would trade Kreider plus a 1st rounder for him right now. He would be perfect to replace Hank with age wise.

No one touches that contract. He returns to form or he is a compliance buy out.
