They aren't moving Despres for a backup goalie.
- Ryan_Wilson

Certainly not for a backup goalie. Tiops floated the idea that Despres could be had for a legit long term solution should MAF poop the bed again this year.

Don't get me wrong, I like Despres, I think he will be good, but I am not against moving him if Maatta is close to the NHL.

It would of course be for a long term piece and not a deadline rental.

The Tiops piece mentioned Halak. Said the Pens like him.....fwiw.

Apparently Despres is in the AHL and Maatta is in the NHL because the Pens feel Maatta outperformed Despres in camp. It's not because of cap problems.

Whether you agree or not, I don't, but it appears Despres stock is falling with Pens management.

I wonder what Florida would want for Scott Clemmensen. Any interest in him as a back up?

I think Maatta will be the better NHL player so I could definitely see Despres' stock technically falling but that doesn't mean his stock is bad.

Despres is in the AHL because he can be and the team won't be hurting due to it. I think it's as simple as that. The cap savings early in the season go a long way towards banking money for a dealing acquisition.

Shero has no choice but take low risks, don't act like he is great at bargaining...he's running out of cap space.

I wouldnt deal him for a rental, but I dont think he alone would warrant us getting a long term solution in goal(assuming Fleury struggles this year). At least when the Pens traded Gogo, there was enough of a book on him at the NHL level for teams to know what they were getting into. Management's unwillingness to play Despres, and give him more responsibility cant be helping his trade value.

He was put on waivers today, so apparently they wouldn't want much lol.

I don't know... His numbers were bad last season, but I don't think I watched him play one game, so I don't know.

If Fleury was ok, and Zatkoff struggled, it would be a cheap easy move for a veteran backup, but I don't know if he's any better than Zatkoff at this point.

I think Despres and Maatta have the same cap hit. Maybe they feel taking a longer look at Maatta will give them some idea about where they are in the near future.

Huh, I guess that answers why his name is suddenly on the brain.

They do, but if you send Matta down, he goes to juniors. If they want to give Matta some games before sending him back, then Despres has to go down. Just a numbers game.

In my opinion Despres went down because they truly do want to see how close Maatta is. But why on earth would that mean Despres is on the outs? You need 6 defenseman and probably pretty soon you'll need at least 3/4. Despres was an easy move he will be back as soon as Maatta project is over.

I don't think Zatkoff is the answer. He's had great regular season numbers, but he's imploded in the last 2 playoffs

I think the Letang injury gave them the perfect chance to look at Maatta. As soon as Letang is back (and if there are no other D injuries), I think Maatta goes back to London. They really don't have the cap space to keep him hanging around as a #7 d-man just for experience or whatever.

With injuries and any potential trades, Despres is going to get a good chunk of playing time at the NHL level this season.
