So whether he had a legitimate chance to make the save has no bearing on how he played? That seems pretty easy to understand from my point of view.

I don't get how thinking that Bernier played better, leads to disappointment in Mason's play. Each Goalies performance stands on it's own merits.

- MJL

I agree with this.

... which might be a sign of the apocalypse.

I guess you missed all the outstanding saves Mason did make? I think on the 2nd goal he stopped 2 point blank shots before it got popped home. How is that on Mason? And the Kessel goal...nobody is stopping that unless Kessel misfires the shot ala Hartnell's chance.

This loss, imo, isn't on Mason in any way, shape or form.

- wolfhounds

nope. he actually looked really solid.

I look at the three goals and ask myself, if Mason had stopped one or two of those tough shots we'd be talking about how great he played. Instead we are talking about what a great game Bernier had.

The other team's goalie played better than ours. Therefore I am disappointed in the play of our goalie. Seems pretty easy to understand

- Dkos

on the third goal he made 2 tough saves and was hung out to try on the third one that went in. the second goal was similar to Schenn's goal. he had little chance on that. the first goal he made a nice save and no one picked up Kessel , really don't see how any of those goals were on mason

Mason is about as responsible for this loss as Emery is.

What's up, stay?

And I agree...1 game in, loss or no, Mason looked pretty good to me.

Their roster is as good as ours...it's just built differently. But you can't tell me a Top 6 of JVR/Bozak/Kessel; Lupul/Kadri/Clarkson (when he returns) isn't comparable to Hartnell/Giroux/Voracek and Read/Lecavalier/Simmonds.

Their defense is just as good as ours, and I'd take James Reimer or Jonathan Bernier as a starter.

Brian Burke did a good job rebuilding that team, and Randy Carlyle's a Stanley Cup winner, too.

- AllInForFlyers

i think bozak is a #2 C and i like how a guy like couts projects as a 3rd line guy. their D is younger & more mobile.

burke had a difficult task and he did it fairly well.

I definitely give the edge to their defense. More mobile and younger. Gunnarson is underrated. If Gardiner gets his act together, they'll be even better.

Really, you don't understand being disappointed by that? I don't understand how you're not?

I'm not quite ready to declare Reimer or Bernier stronger than Mason. Why would I be?
- wolfhounds

i'll take either one of them over a guy who has had 4 bad seasons in a row. while the odds are against mason, he was solid tonite.

It's simple. Your logic is that Bernier played great, so Mason was disappointing. As though it's impossible for both players to have played well. As if it's a ying and a yang, and it's one or the other. Instead of looking at how each player, played on his own merits.

eh. still way too early to be worried about much. mason looked solid which is a huge plus. it feels weird having a full schedule and not having to worry about a 3 game skid burying you in the standings.

(feel free to feed me this rational bullpoop when fleury and an ahl goalie combine to have a GAA north of 3.5 haha)

he carried a big stick and never learned how to walk softly. very political situation in TOR, w/ a lot of non-hockey people in an battle of egos.

If that's what you think. What Laviolette did, makes sense to me. Not to mention that, after being arguably one of the top forwards in the pre season, Couturier did not play a very strong game tonight.
- MJL

I'm a firm believer in stay the course. Be consistent, stay the course, time and pressure will erode your opponent. If you deviate from that too earlier simply because you got down by a goal with 18 minutes left then maybe, just maybe you aren't convinced of the approach. That lack of conviction could bleed out to others in your charge. Just a thought. 11 minutes for a player you're unwilling to trade begs the question, what is the plan, for him, the team?

I should add that I thought the team played well and look forward to a great season.

Hey, I'm not saying Mason is a bad goalie or played badly tonight. I just think its natural to feel disappointed when your goalie doesn't play as well as the other teams goalie. After the game the Flyers players all mentioned how great Bernier played. All the tv commentators remarked on what a great game Bernier had. I don't blame Mason for the loss. I'm still disappointed that he didn't outplay Bernier.

All is well, thanks. Busy is good, but it sounds like you could use a little downtime. Hopefully things slow a bit for you as the weather cools and hockey heats up!

No Coach, coaches like that. Benches are shortened. Players who are playing well, play more. Top offensive players, will play more when down a goal in the 3rd. If the Flyers were up a goal in the 3rd, Couturier would have gotten heavy ice time. One game doesn't change the plan of a team. And Couturier didn't exactly earn that ice time tonight. It's an 82 game Season.

Can't argue with that. Bernier was a wall tonight. Still, if Mason gives us that type of performance for most or all of his starts, we're solid in net.

Tonight? Yes, that's the way I feel. Bernier was great. Mason wasn't. I'm disappointed. Doesn't seem like such a mind blowing concept to me.

So if Bernier hadn't played well, and let in a few weak goals, then you wouldn't have been disappointed in Mason's play?
