That's because the linesman now has to focus on at last 6 things (puck, goalie, attacking player, defending player, red line, goal line) instead of 3.

I'm not knocking the linesmen. Just seems dumb to add something so hard to pick up on into the rules. I'm sure they love their jobs but I bet they are all inwardly groaning cuz this is gonna be a pain.

Per reports, Jake Voracek was injured in a game against the NJ Devils when he was tripped on a breakaway and was sent careening into the goal post.

The NHL is reportedly looking to make tripping an automatic 5-minute major/game misconduct to prevent injuries like this from occuring again. No word on whether or not goal post material will be changed from iron to foam for the upcoming season.

That's my issue with it. It defeats its own purpose.
- jmatchett383

Called correctly it will cut down on those icing collisions... But it's going to be a bit before the calls are ingrained... And it's going to get called differently person to person adding some confusion for players.
It will take time, but maybe it's a good change? Hard to say right now.

I'm not either. They have a very hard job, and it just got even harder by having to implement a rule that defeats its own purpose. When play's incorrectly blown dead late in a playoff game, I'll be curious to see what happens.

Play-off game, or when a goal is scored directly off an icing face-off.
Yeah. Wait for it.

Everyone on the flyers needs to step up and be accounted for what ever they do. Lavi can't be scared to bench people and play the better players. People would be playing harder because they know their jobs are etched in stone.

An apology and a faceoff at center ice as usual.

In theory it should go to the defending team and icing should be called if it's a tight race. What we saw more often than not was that icing was not called and play continued as normal. Only really obvious calls were made (which kinda defeats the point of stopping injuries do to icing collisions).
- FlyersGrace

i'm brain dead or something.... your first sentence confuses me.

if the decision "goes to" the defending team, that's the team that chucked the puck out of the zone. so if it's a tight race... does it go in favor of, or against, the defending team?

As a Flyers fan who has watched the Defense get banged up for the last 4 years, I'm sorry, but anything that can help our old, slow defense from getting hurt is a plus.

Right...but it won't. It will probably end up saving them about 0.1 miles skated per man per game, but that's about it.

Now if they could just get rid of the Trapezoid, then they would really be safer.

Has this been an issue? I dont remember Lavi being soft on anyone. Dropped Hartnell to 3rd line at the beginning 2 years ago. Benched him for periods at a time too last year. Also benched Briere, Voracek, and Lieno. I dont think he has an issue benching someone...

Lots of positive commentary from Habs fans on tsn regarding the Gill signing. Maybe they are talking about the Gill of 4 years ago, but nonetheless, maybe this will turn out to be a good signing at 1 yr 700k.

I don't have a major problem with it. Extra veteran defenseman for 1 year where he can be waived/buried if needed.
Now, Rosehill on the other hand, is possibly the worst signing in team history.

Just got a text from my Bruins friend busting my stones about this Hal Gill nonsense.

The text included this nugget.
This can't be the guy the Flyers just signed. Has to be someone else right? RIGHT??!!

That is some great detective work. I found a reference, but have no idea how he came across it:

No, it fits his hometown (checked Wikipedia) and age.

"Born in Concord, Massachusetts, Hal Gill was drafted 207th overall by the Boston Bruins in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft after a fine career at Nashoba High School where he was also a highly regarded football quarterback. "
