She wants to take lessons. She's 10 - average size - never played before. I was looking at Daisy Rock guitars - not sure if they are good, and wondering if she needs a short scale (22.5") or just start with a standard scale?

You might consider a Baby Taylor guitar. You can get them for under 300 bucks, have a solid spruce top and an ebony fretboard which I like a lot, and are very comfortable size to play. I've got one that I bought for my kids that I also use as a travel/campfire/couch guitar. Never regretted the purchase - Taylor makes some very nice guitars.
