They hold some value, true, but they still need work... and even moreso, the people using them need to learn context, and need to learn how much weight the stats carry.

It's easy to say, for example, that the Leafs were lucky because they managed to win with poor possession stats... and then point to a high shooting percentage as evidence.

But that's ignoring the fact that while the teams they faced did possess the puck a lot, they weren't in threatening areas... and while the Leafs' shooting% was above normal, that's A) part skill, not luck, and B) a sign of the team's new willingness under carlyle to go to the net.

Boxing out the opponents on defense, and taking the puck to high percentage scoring areas are two of the biggest reasons for the Leafs' success last season... but a lot of advanced stats users can't see past the numbers.
