Alternatively, these guys make decent trade bait come the deadline, and if a kid proves hes NHL ready midseason when injuries occur... well, that's upgrades and cashing in on deadline prices.

Exactly. These are movable contracts with a very low cap hit. Should we fall out of contention we could easily move them for a draft pick. Robak and Petrovic, the two most NHL ready blue line prospects we have, did not look good at all during camp/pre-season. They were both out played by Weegar, and Weegar is 3 years away from NHL action.
By all accounts Ryan Whitney had an amazing pre-season and it was a tough decision letting him go. Also, you know Tim Thomas didn't want to be playing behind too many young defensemen. We already have Gudbranson and Kulikov back there and both of them seem to be on the verge of breaking out. We all know that defensemen take a little longer to develop. Let's ride this out. We have a ton of veterans with one years contracts; Gomez, Boyes, Gilbert, Whitney, Thomas.. and who knows what the future holds for them after this season. But with the cap going up nearly $20 million next year, these one year deals don't bother me at all.
