Chicago last year, LA the year before, and Boston prior to that all seem to fair well without an "enforcer" (though with Lucic and Thornton, the Bruins really didn't have use for one).

Can't recently remember Detroit carry one at the end of the bench either.

Not sure what Rosehill enforces. He doesn't stop guys like Kaleta from taking runs at Giroux, and Kaleta wouldn't fight him, so he'd have to fight John Scott.

How does Rosehill fighting Scott protect Giroux?

To me, the difference between goon and enforcer is, a guy like Shawn Thornton is an enforcer, because he plays a regular shift & dresses in playoffs, where a guy like Shelley or Rosehill is in the league solely to fight

Which is why the rule was implemented regarding players with junior eligibility required to be returned to their junior club rather to their NHL team's farm system.

1) Coburn has been practicing daily with Timonen and the plan right now is to restore that previously long-running pairing. While it is possible that Coburn could still get traded, he is otherwise a lock.

2) Meszaros' role -- lots of offensive zone stars at 5-on-5, power play time as a guy with a big shot from the point, some PK time but generally shielded at 5-on-5 from too much ice time against top opposing offensive lines -- now belongs to Streit. They are different sorts of players stylistically, as Meszaros is much bigger and more physical, but they play the same sorts of minutes.

3) Grossmann, in his specific role as a shot-blocking defensive D, outplayed Meszaros in his specific, more puck-oriented role in the preseason. It wasn't even all that close. Yes, it's possible that Grossmann is the one who gets dealt (with the club possibly trying to get by with Gill for a year). I think part of the reason why Lauridsen was around in camp for so long had as much to do with seeing if he might be ready to step into Grossmann's role right now if the older and much more expensive player was traded. I also think the answer they got was a resounding no.

4) Erik Gustafsson had a pretty weak preseason, but the club would like to give him a chance to be a top-six this season. And, yes, I know that for a fact.

Not saying it did, simply saying in 3 years he'd probably want a big deal. Tampa may want to delay it by a year so they can set up contracts so they aren't all done in or around the same time.

He may not like it but as long as it's available for Tampa they have every right to use it to their advantage.

Hear you. Perhaps its a product of the times. Hybrid specialization. Some guys who can fight can also play. By your definition Dave Schultz could have been an enforcer. Most nights he took a regular shift on the third or fourth line. Played in playoffs. Jeez, he scored 20. But on the other hand he was the ultimate goon. He picked his spots, lots of theatrics, undressed a lot of guys who wanted no parts of him but got stuck fighting because there was a stigma of turtling back the. As far as his hockey abilities (don't take this personally, Dave), his scoring was a function of guys being literally scared to death to get near him. Hey, I was glad the Flyers were winning but was embarrassing to watch how guys wanted nothing to do with him.

No, not really. Hardly ever in fact

Still have to make a move to maximize Pronger's LTIR. As i stands they are $16,022 over the cap if Hall and Gervais are claimed/sent to the AHL.

I'm still bothered that they risked Hall to waivers over Rosehill, but I guess the need to employ a goon trumps keeping a good faceoff guy and penalty killer, who might actually play in a playoff game, if the team makes it.

I'm also not a fan of the bottom six. I like Read and Couturier, but I'd prefer somebody other than Talbot there. A 4th line of Hall, with Talbot and Rinaldo would be great, but now that's not likely.

Halifax should move him now. They'll only have 1 more season with him, and they already seem like a very offensively capable team.

I think Read has earned top 6 minutes with his play.
