sure the approach can be frustrating, but to me, its pretty cut and dry

there's two ways to operate in this current NHL. either try your best to patchwork things while maintaining a playoff caliber team and hope for the best... or to suck for around 5 years and build completely through the draft.

there's really not much middleground.

personally, im proud to root for a team that refuses to accept losing and has only missed the playoffs in 1.5 seasons in the last long while.

Solid post. We all know the first win streak they hit, we will all be dreaming of a cup. Me being one of the first.

Hell I know Crims, believe me its ironic.

Obviously there is still passion there, but I suppose I can feel it kind of starting to waver. Not really for good or anything, but I can admit it. Thats the only real frustrating item.

Not living in Philly its hard to know, but I do seriously wonder what the mood is like in general.

Mood is awesome in philly. With the phillies, eagles, flyers, sixers over the past 2-3 years its been a magical ride.

Yeah, Hall could have easily moved to either wing (or been the 13th forward) if they really valued him enough to keep him on the roster.

Nobody's going to say that Rosehill is a more useful player than Hall, but he benefits from being the only heavyweight on the roster, thus he fills a role that management appears to deem mandatory.

It also now seems that they're going to fill the 3rd-line wing spot via trade/UFA... wouldn't expect it to happen until after Oct 1, though.

i'd love to see them add a guy like mitchell (just an example because his name was mentioned), but even if they do i hope hall has a spot on laughton's wing (or vice versa)

Amen. And I love when it's stated that the Flyers use patchwork for the defense and goaltending. They signed Timonen to a long term deal back in 07 to shore up the defense. That's patchwork? Make quality trades for defenseman such as Coburn, Carle, Meszaros and Grossmann. That's patchwork? They trade for a franchise defenseman in Pronger. That's patchwork? They sign arguably the best goaltender available, and a former Vezina Trophy finalist to a 9 year deal. That's patchwork? I'd like to see other teams lose their stud franchise defenseman to a career ending injury, and see how fast their GM's replace them or be accused of patchwork. Detroit lost Lidstrom to retirement. Have they replaced him yet? Hell everyone talks about how great Lou Lamariello is as a GM. Stevens and Neidermayer left there how long ago? Has he replaced them?

I thought I read somewhere that the Flyers practice at the Skate Zone Sunday, but it's not listed on the Fyers website. Anyone know if they have an open practice tomorrow?
- Dkos

They just tweeted an hour ago that they'll have open practice tomorrow at 11:30 at Skate Zone.

I'm still not sure why they waived Hall. Should we expect him to clear waviers? I'm still on the fence about Laughton and fourth line center role/possible third line winger role VS going back to juniors. Where are you all standing in regards to that?

not to oversimplify, but i think he should be there if they think he's one of their 12 best forwards. if that means as 4th line center, so be it

Chances are good that he'll clear, mostly due to every team needing to have final rosters submitted by Monday (Saturday waivers don't clear for 48-hours). If no team has scooped up David Steckel off UFA yet, I doubt there's any pent up interest for Hall.

It would be nice to have him continue to be available to them, but with Holmstrom and now VandeVelde in the system, the loss would be hardly noticeable and gaining a contract slot would be a good thing.

I would be ok with that, especially with the amount of injuries we accrue, I'm sure he won't be stuck on that 4th line all year. Still scratching my head on waiving Hall though.

I don't see either Vandevelde or Holmstrom having the faceoff or PK ability that Hall has. So it would be noticeable to me, if Hall was claimed. If they felt Holmstrom could do what Hall can, they wouldn't have signed Hall.

I think it's for flexibility and has to do with a possible deal on the table, rather then not wanting Hall.

I clarified earlier that I meant to say the marketing was based on aging players...streit, lecavalier and emery......false hopes built around big $ in streit and vincent small $$ in emery
streit makes bruno g look like grossmann
he is soft as pudding (streit)
Honestly most people here dont trust the coach to do anything but continue to try to do the same wrong thing over and over
and its the same song with goaltending and d over and over
groundhog day in hockey

Streit was brought in to provide puck movement and offense from the back end. Not because he's a defensive stalwart. It takes a mix of players to form a quality team. The Flyers have Schenn, Grossmann, Coburn, and Timonen to do the heavy lifting defensively. Emery was 17-1 with a .922 SV% and a 1.92 GAA last year. So if Emery get's solid play in front of him, he can be an effective netminder.
You don't think the Flyers base any marketing on Giroux?

Actually, they're promoting the new players they added over the summer...like every other team in sports tends to do.

Despite the salaries given, Lecavalier and Streit were brought in as support players, and saying that one makes Gervais look like Grossmann is honestly just being ridiculous.

There are things to be concerned about, but you're taking it a bit too far.

Actually, under the new CBA, I believe that waivers are daily, even on Sunday.

I think that there will be teams interested in Hall. He's signed to a very reasonable contract, is a very goo faceoff guy, and also a very solid penalty killer.

Steckel is just as good at faceoffs, but he's never been as heavily depended upon as Hall as a PK guy.

To waive him, to me is short sighted and kind of dumb. Better off waiving Gervias and Rosehill, send Laughton-who didn't exactly stand out any more than Hall did-to the OHL and get tons of ice time, and keep Hall as a dependable 4th line center and keep the clock from starting on Laughton's deal.
