Mike Augello: The Burgeoning Blueline; Rielly Remaining? - mikeinbuffalo
Putting Liles on waivers and hoping someone takes him off their hands is Nonis's only out...
I know Leaf fans think he did well but he is just prolonging the agony. Franson got exactly what he wanted and that was to be arbitration eligible next year. I think many Leaf fans and others are going to be sorely disappointed when the Cap does not go up significantly next year and the Leafs Cap hell will remain with so many players to sign.
Let the hatred and telling me Im wrong begin.... |

Removing Liles, even if through Buyout, in addition to other money coming off the books saves Leafs over $5M right there.
If cap goes up even $2M, they have plenty of room. Might spell the end of Phaneuf in Toronto, but many wouldn't mind that anyway.
They'll be a bit tight, but nowhere near like this year. |

Makenzie seems to think the leafs are willing to keep rielly so long as he's going to play at least 3 of every 5 games and 12-15mins/game.

I don't think it's his ONLY out but I think it's a very likely scenario.
When you say "so many players to sign" is implying they have to sign them all. Out of all of the UFA's and RFA's there are only 4-5 that should be sure things to re-sign.
So no hatred. But ya, you're wrong. |

Not possible with Liles still a member of Leafs, in any capacity. |

Weren't you the one that repeatedly said Leafs will NOT be able to sign both Franson and Kadri?? Most said they would - you argued.
So, in response to your last line - yeah, you are wrong, as usual. |

That won't happen if Franson has a down year and Phaneuf re-signs for $4.5M |

You are entitled to your opinion, not sure where you form such an opinion though all the evidence points to a higher cap next year. Every informed hockey insider says the cap is rising.
The leafs cap isn't as bad as everyone seems to think. This summer all the arm chair gm who think they know all said the leafs can't afford kadri and franson, and looked what happend.... They got both signed and still added another FA @1m. The leafs have 2.5mil coming off the books next year in buyout/salary retention. |

Kessel is suspended which throws everything off. and clarkson starting suspension soon
Should be
jvr - bozak - kessel
Lupul - kadri - clarkson
raymond - bolland - kulemin
anyone - mcclement - anyone
with those two suspended at different times its throwing it all off |

The unfortunate truth is that Phaneuf will be making his current salary or MORE next year. Whether its with the Leafs or not. |

Saw an article on Sportsnet saying latest projections are 67. 70 would be a hell of a revenue jump from 11-12 but I suppose it's possible. |

Ive been saying for while now (along with many others) that I believe the cap will be around 69-70 million next season.
Phaneuf will still be too costly. |

So you think revenue will be up 17% in one year? That is what it would take to get to 70 million. I know most cant calculate and do math...but the outdoor games project to add 180 mill....so even still not even close to getting to 70 mill...
We'll all just have to wait and see but my bet is we see 64-65 mill next season. |

In terms of cap hit:
Liles on the Marlies + Rielly on the Leafs = Liles on the Leafs + Rielly in junior.
Makes it interesting. |
