It is the unfortunate truth... I think a lot of people have very high expectations.
- jak521

Oh, I know it's the truth. Not much was done in the off season. High expectations? Yikes. My highest expectation is that they may squeak into the playoffs (and get summarily bounced out immediately). I'll watch and I'll root like crazy, but I have very low expectations for the season.

Come on guys. Lets not be too knee jerk. This team is still very talented top to bottom. Does their style have match up problems with some teams, yes. Jersey, Boston, Chicago, and LA are going to be tough match-ups. Maybe the Rangers depending how they play. Outside of that, we will likely play realy well against everyone else. IMO they are a playoff team. I dont think NJ makes it, so all we would have to do is avoid Boston... which we wouldnt play until Conference Finals anyway.

Why? They aren't a defensive stiffling team. Its not like they were facing our best during this pre-season.

au contraire...

Leighton single handedly kept them in a few games early on, only to wither out as the game wore on. I forget which game it was that he literally had to make about 8 game changing saves in the first period alone. Was he great in that series... not at all.. But it was the team in front of him that was the real problem. The same problem they have had for a few years now.

So was it also Chicago's fault that Niemi had a 3.83 GAA and 88.3 SV%? Or was that just bad goaltending?

How would we not play Boston until the Conference Finals? We could see them in any of the first 3 rounds.

I think NJ has just as much, if not better, a shot at making the postseason as the Flyers.

Cory Schneider might will us into the playoffs all on his own I know it is pre season but he is going to make a case for top 3 goalie in the east with Lundquist being #1 and Rask and Schneider battling for 2nd and 3rd, Anderson might be in there to if he stays healthy !

For sure I still think we are a bubble team this season even with Cory but he has looked unreal to start his Devils career allowing 1 goal in 10 periods of play that is enough to get me excited.

How? I think they could be a top team and finish 1 or 2 and we are a team that I see fighting for one of the 7/8 spots.

I am glad you think it is funny Cory is the real deal though. We will still struggle to score goals but it will be a lot harder for the rest of the teams to score on us this year then it was last year!

It's still September... would have seemed downright loony last September if somebody had come on here and predicted that MTL would finish 2nd in the East, OTT/TOR/NYI would all make the POs and the Devils (fresh off Cup run) plus Flyers would be out.

I actually believe he could be right.. People are writing off the Devils before the season has even started.. They may not have a superstar, but they are a pretty solid NHL team.

We have easily just as many (if not more) question marks. Schenn, Couts, team defense and the actual defense, goalie, coaching, players like Simmonds and Voracek maintaining their growth, Hartnell having a bounce back year..

Didnt see this, but I agree.. I just listed all of the question marks we have going into the season...
