Not saying those would have been better options, but I expect no miracles coming from between the pipes. Without Pronger to solidify that d-core, you get what you get.

As long as our system stays how it is, we will never have more than a mediocre goalie on this team. I think Lundqvists numbers would be closer to middle of the pack if he was playing on this team.

Nothing personal Jake, but to me:
Boucher, Leighton, Rookie Bobrovsky, Broken Hip Emery, Biron and Mason

Are junkyard trash compared to Lundqvist.

I just think they need to continue taking the time to build this right. It will take time. They can continue to try and stay competative by getting stop-gaps like Streit, but the crew needs more ELITE talent on that back end.

Regarding defense in particular, we saw pretty big consistency issues before the arrival of Pronger.

Since that time, what have been seen:
-Aging Timonen
-Broken down Meszaros
-Coburn who has NEVER been consistent
-Grossman who is solid but best suited to a secondary role
-trash 6th D, where at least O'Donnell brought stability

Now the only thing somewhat significant brought in since that time to try and improve the D core has been Luke Schenn, who has been a nice suprise. Other than Schenn we have Streit, which the jury is still out big time on.

More needs to be done, and they need more elite talent on that back end. Im not really suprised to be honest, at what we are seeing. While many of these media guys are full of poop, maybe its not so crazy that a few of them know what they are talking about when questioning the Flyers back end.

That's why the Devils with Marek Zdlicky, Andy Greene and Peter Herold can get the the SCF in 2012, and why the Flyers get creamed by them.

The defense corps should be adequate. But if you don't have the forwards doing a good job backchekcing, it's going to look awful.

If they were 5 - 1, it still wouldn't mean anything.

That said, if you don't think Laviolette deserves to be on the hot seat, I kinda don't know what you're watching.

Definately.

Its a mix of a bunch of things imo. I have for a long time thought that while talented, they are kind of a group that has too much "stupid" in them. Weird thing to say I suppose.

I still say 2-3 years before you see this team get competative. Management just needs to be smart, and to be if there is an option to improve that back end with quality instead of quantity, you make it.
