He's still with the team, along (somewhat surprisingly) with VandeVelde. Doesn't necessarily mean he'll survive the final cuts. - bmeltzer

Pretty much between Laughtin and VandeVelde now, isn't it? I guess they could recall McGinn, but he was just as ineffective as the rest when he was up and playing.
EDIT: Panaccio tweeted that Holmgren says that Vandevelde is "ahead" of Raffl & McGinn in the battle for a spot. |

Let the fire Lavy discussion begin, yet again! - aantny88
For poops and giggles, give us 5 reasons why he shouldn't be on the hot seat? If you can come up with 5 good solid ones, I won't post a single comment about his inability to adjust for the first 20 games of the season.
His Stanley Cup from nearly a decade ago isn't a good solid one, because he managed to miss the playoffs for the next 3 years. His amazing use of timeouts isn;t one either, because if he managed to have the team ready to play on a regular basis, he wouldn't need to use them in such dramatic fashion.
I want good, valid reasons based on what he's done lately to deserve to keep his job. |

in his tenure here - he's gone from SCF, 2nd round, 2nd round, missed playoffs. it's not going in the right direction. he should be on the hot seat, and i'd bet he's certainly putting pressure on himself and believes he's on the hot seat. |

I just want somebody that complains about the "Fire Lavi" posts to explain to me why he deserves to be treated as if he's Mike Babcock or Scotty Bowman. |

I'd really like to see Laviolette make the (frank)ing adjustments. That's my preference, to keep him and have him make the needed changes and have success.

From what I see on twitter, it sure seems like Holmgren wants to find a way to get Hal Gill in as the 7th defenseman. |

didn't lava make a comment in the offseason (maybe sth town meeting blog from bo?) that they had made some adjustments toward the end of last season but he wasn't going to give specifics.
i was hoping it was the same adjustments that had them looking better with an ahl defense than their old nhl one...
i haven't been able to watch any preseason but it sounds like that all went out the window? |

Yeah, they made the breakout more simple and forced the forwards to be less aggressive to give the defense easier outlet passes. Worked pretty well, as the AHL caliber defense helped the team go 11-5 down the stretch and beat 9 playoff teams.
That's what I was hoping to see . Perhaps we'll see it in the regular season, because all I saw in the games I watched were teams with smart forechecks clog the neutral zone and kill the Flyers ability to get speed on the attack and keep them from generating chances and scoring goals |

1. Major injuries at worst times
2. Can't control not getting right players
3. Not every system is perfect, every team has weakness other teams can exploit better then some.
4. His record is 145-95-29
5. He develops young kids pretty good. Schenn, Couts, Giroux, Voracek, JVR, Simmonds, Read, the other Schenn..... |

Upon further review, it was deemed that the snail was actually travelling backwards. |

1. Ottawa lost their best center(Spezza), Best goal scorer (Michalek), best goalie (Anderson), and Norris Trophy defenseman(Karlsson) last year. They made the playoffs.
2. Failed to adjust his system to the players he has on hand. Coaches have to adjust when things are not working. Laviolette has gone 9-23-1 against the New York Rangers, New Jersey and Tampa Bay the last two years, while being unable to effectively counter the attack those teams use to dominate the Flyers.
3. It's not his system, it's his unwillingness to adjust it. It's not as if they need to be the Devils or Preds. They need to make adjustments to beat teamsthat trap and forecheck well
4. His record last year wasn't good enough to get him in the playoffs, and his playoff record since 2011 is 9-13. In each season his teams have finished progressively worse.
5. Couturier had a sophmore slump. Schenn has hardly developed into a great player. JvR didn't do more than show flashes here. Giroux was going to be good regardless of the coach. I'll give you Voracek and Simmonds.
So, no, you couldn't give me 5 good solid reasons |
