I remember at a Ranger/Isles game at the Coliseum back in the 90s at a time when Brian Leetch was at his peak & particularly dominating that game & a couple Islander fans kept argueing w me saying how much he sucked. Lol, some people just can't seperate facts from hate. Like Sawx fans saying Jeter sucks...its all his fault anyway. |

That's exactly it. Like the Potvin sucks chant. Did he really suck? I wasn't even close to born at the time he played but at the same time, I know enough about him, to know he was probably the best D man in Isles history |

No one said your golden boy isn't one of the best in the game. Relax. Its only when certain fans come on here and post that Tavares is in the same category as Crosby, Ovechkin, Stamkos, thats when I say, hold it there. He may get there one day, but he certainly is not there yet. |

Its a well documented story. Potvin injured a Ranger bad with a hit that most say wasn't dirty, but excessive. We're talking the 1970s where highlights of anything, especially hockey were not run on a loop a thousand times a day. The Potvin sucks was born from that. It ran off the old organ tune at the Garden, then when they stopped playing that becuase of the chant, fans whistled the melody &....Potvin sucks...the rest is history.
It's beyond silly now, with kids who weren't alive when he played are doing it, but its something that probably will never die. |

personally, i classify JT in the category with stamkos, ovi, and malkin. he doesn't put up 100+ points by himself because he plays on a pretty poopty team but if you just watch him play, you know he's in that category.
ranger fans use the whole "rick nash is elite even though he never scored over 80 points cuz he played on a poopty team" argument so i think that same argument is valid for JT, considering he's played on arguably worse teams than columbus ever was.
if i'm doing a fantasy draft today (not for 1 year but going forward for the next 10 years), i pick one of these guys (whoevers available) in this order: crosby, toews, stamkos, malkin, ovechkin, then JT. |

That player was Ulf Nilsson. Who was as clean a player ever. Hit wasn't necesarrily dirty but he ended Ulf's career. Him and Anders Hedberg came from the WHA Winnipeg Jets where they played on a line with Bobby Hull . |

Rick Nash is an elite power forward, nothing more nothing less. He is one of the best power forwards in the league, but he's not an elite overall player. I mean, no one in the league has more goals that Rick Nash over the past 7 years. Tavares still has a little more to add to his resume before grouping him with players that already have proven themselves. TB isn't exactly the greatest team out there but Stamkos puts up 50+ goals consistently every year. That makes him probably the Most Elite Sniper in the league. Tavares is a world class talent, but has yet to really do anything that puts him in the top of ANY category. Crosby scored 100pts. as a rookie. Crosby comes back to the team after his long injury and scores at over 2ppg pace! Ovechkin has fallen a little from the limelight, I admit. Anyway, I have watched Tavares and I think he's amazing. But again, until that translates into consistent ELITE performances, again, he's just not there. Logan Couture is amazing. Ever consistently watch him play? Same goes for Evander Kane, Patrick Kane, but again, I wouldn't use any of their names in the same conversation as Sidney Crosby or Stamkos. If Crosby doesn't miss more significant time, he will go down in History as one of the top 5 point producers in the NHL. Stamkos at this pace could be in the top 5 goal scorers of all time. You absolutely CANNOT say the same about Tavares at all. Thats all I'm saying. |

Yea true, most young people don't even know what they're chanting about. However, I still wait to hear that whistle to chant myself when I'm in the Garden

Turgeon was one hell of a goal scorer the first few years w the Isles before Dale Hunter. Never even close to being as skilled a leader or all around player as Mess.
That was the last time I seriously hated the Islanders, was those early 90s teams, little sh!t bags like Ray Ferraro, Derek King, Benoit Hogue.
After the sweep in the 94 playoffs & the Cup I softened on them a lot....and their fans. |
