I guess they figured that if they're going to have a 1B, they'd pay a little extra to upgrade on Scrivens. Who wouldn't want a young goalie with starter upside? Let's say he plays well, but Reimer keeps the job. Worst case scenario, you trade Bernier for assets.

I don't think they needed to upgrade at goal, but they saw an opportunity, so they took it.

Both are good defensemen, but not great together. Franson is one of our worst defensemen in his own end and Gardiner likes to gamble.
