They were lucky there too.... luck luck luck..
Measuring "possession" off shots is absolutely idiotic and hilariously flawed. - burn
Also, having Lupul and Riemer injured was lucky. Pure luck. |

So without our best puck possession players (MacA, Grabo and Frattin), I think we'll be in bottom 5 of the league...
...wait, what?!

Everything that went the Leafs way, will not go that way this year. Every weakness they had will only get worse, not improve.
Everything that went wrong for every other team will be improved and they will not regress in any way.
Sorry, anyone who looks at that roster and concludes, according to ANY stats, that they are a 29th place team is a fcuking idiot.

Now I'm officially worried. I liked it better when we had no expectations....seems like every time we have expectations, they fail. And when we have no expectations they do something crazy like go to the conference final |

Description of advanced stats in a nutshell. - A_Tree
I can't fathom how people don't get this. That shots isn't an acurate measure of possesion. Ever heard of cycling. That in of itself is the antithesis of corsi.
It's funny how if your shot total is low but you score at a good rate your lucky (not good lucky) but if you shoot a ton and don't score much you're good. IMO you could say that teams that shoot a lot but don't score are lucky when they score. If you can't score unless you fire puck from everywhere and anywhere that seems more like luck than if you shoot little and score. That to me is skill, and shooting a lot to try to score is more luck than skill.
It's so ass backwards. |

agreed
its obvious the leafs were just being super selective with their shots.
no other explaination for getting massively outshot. |

Advanced stats are relatively new in hockey, they are a complete work in progress. I'm sure the implementation of these methods of analysis is good hearted meant to bring some statistical complexity to the game. The major problem is that hockey is literally like any other sport that currently uses a form of advanced stats - in my opinion it could have the most variables of any sport in the world.
Despite this, that writer was simply regurgitating some numbers to make his argument sound new and innovative....

There going to be a lot of angry fans when the leafs rip up this year.
We shall start excuses for them
1. The league favors them
2. They cheated
3. They are lucky
4. 1967 ha ha ha (oh wait my teams never one a cup ever, so that doesn't count)
5. Phil Kessel is fat and should be out of the league
6. Our team is injured
7. Our team is injury woes
8. Leafs played against back ups |

Carlyle said during his media scrum today that they had until Oct. 25th (ie 10 games) to make a decision on Reilly. So it sounds like he'll be here for a while. I do expect them to send him back to junior at that point, though - or at least I hope they do. |

Massively outshot, just look at the comparisons. Percentage wise, there is a separation of 5 shots-per-game-let-up from Toronto (@27th) to the New York Isles (@10th)... To make such a drastic conclusion as he made is ridiculous. |

Just becuase they didn't shoot the puck doesn't mean they didn't have posession. Fact.
Giving up shots doesn't mean you were dominated.
The article says that (because of shot totals) the leafs were out processed by what 30%? That is false, just from watching the games.

Yeah, it's better when we just miss the playoffs for 8 straight years, huh. An entire contract, lockout to lockout. |

I enjoy watching people try to find excuses as to why Toronto made the playoffs last season.
It can't be that they're improving. Must be luck. They were supposed to be a lottery team forever. It isn't fair. |
