So without our best puck possession players (MacA, Grabo and Frattin), I think we'll be in bottom 5 of the league...

...wait, what?!

I like the point about Toronto beig a case study this year, seei g if they maintain their winning g percentage despite those awful advanced stats.

Key departure... Cody franson

Leafs are the luckiest team in the league.

Yeah this article is a joke.

As others pointed out guys like bolland and clarkson are startisticslly as good or better possession players as those moved out, but the take a hit on possesion? Utterly clueless.

Enjoyed how they put a percentage to the amount of time they spend in their zone based on shots, like that acurally measures it correctly.

People eat this poop up, really have no clue how this game works.

The leafs are one of the most talented and toughest teams in the league. There, it's been said.

Can't wait for the puck to drop for real this year!!

I agree, Toronto will be under the microscope this season. Nonetheless, the article is madness.

I hate betting against Luo and never count them out, but I think Schneider wiil have to put a GAA of 1.50 for that to happen.

I just don't see where the goal scoring comes from. They lost both parise and kovi from the SC finalist team.

and clarkson......

I think Schneider will have to be below 1.50GAA for them to have a sniff.

The team that finished 9th last in the previous season loses Kovalchuk and Clarkson and manages to move up 20 spots?

That should tell us basically everything we need to know about the merits of those stats.

you took 2 shots in the last 4 mins..... I took 1. you've have the puck 2X as much as me...... except I've controlled the puck for 2 mins and you controlled it for 2 mins.... oh and I scored on my shot and you didn't.

But you're winning...

I love how these predictions of the Leafs being "Lucky" only concentrate on possession and shooting % stats.

What about goaltending or penalty kill? Those were the two biggest reasons the Leafs kept being a medicore team and last season did a complete turnaround. They had some of the best goalie stats in the NHl and finished 2nd best on the PK. Usually they are 30th in both those categories. Yet, these issues don't even get considered.

Compare the roster of the Flames and Leafs and try to tell me they are no better than each other.

Some spend way too much time focusing on stats rather then enjoying the games...

And they've predicted that largely because of goaltending. But far superior goaltending last season had nothing to do with the Leafs making the playoffs. It was all luck, shooting % and possession numbers.

They were lucky there too.... luck luck luck..

Measuring "possession" off shots is absolutely idiotic and hilariously flawed.

It's hilarious seeing the love Grabovski is suddenly getting. If he's on the Leafs after last season's performancce and earning 5.5 million, the haters would point-out how useless he is and overpaid.

The fact is, Bozak was easily better last season.

Not to mention that New Jersey's goaltending really hasn't been a huge problem. It's putting pucks in the other net. Subtracting a 40 and a 30 goal scorer doesn't really help that much.

Last year's undisputed top 4 teams (and semi-finalists):

-Chicago (now predicted 11th in the league)
-Boston (now predicted 10th)
-Los Angeles (now predicted 6th)
-Pittsburgh (now predicted 8th)

That article is pure click-bait. I'm sad to have contributed to it.

Interesting side-note: If the Leafs finish with 73 points, it will be their worst season since the Mike Murphy years in 1996-98.

For the 7th best team last year - a team showing steady progression since bottoming out under Wilson - to suddenly turn in their worst season in 14 years after having a good off-season would be so unlikely as to be statistically insignificant.

For what it's worth, at our lowest point under Wilson when we handed Boston the 2nd overall pick, we finished with 74 points.
