Ok...guys....the Leafs have 333k currently with this line up.

Kessel Bozak JVR
Lupul Kadri Raymond
Kulemin Bolland Colborne
Orr McLement McLaren*

Phaneuf Gunnar
Franson Ranger
Gardiner Fraser

Liles

*Injured

So with that being said, they need to find someone to play on the 4th line to replace McLaren with just over $300k in cap space. They do not have enough money to insert anyone, really. If any other injuries come about, even more problems.

- Colin Dambrauskas

While I like Liles, and would ideally want to keep him on roster... he won't be by season's start.

Either trade or waivers, he's gone... Holzer probably loses his spot to Brennan, and the Leafs are fine for cap, carrying 3 extra players.

Cap Geek says they've got -1 milly now. Remove Smith (550), Liles (925), and Holzer (787) from that equation like you have and the Leafs would have about 1.25 million.

They get some cap relief for injuries so McLaren's fill in won't hurt their cap situation. They'll likely need to carry an extra fwd and a 7th dman. 1.25 is tight but you probably can expect names like Smith and Brennan because they're cheap.

What does Giroux make? 8? Sign Kessel for 8@8 and put it behind you. It may seem like an overpayment now, bit he'd still be in his early 30s when it expires.

Boy next year is shaping up to be a hell of a cap-mess.

Kessel, Dion, Bolland, Kuli, McClement, Raymond, Frazer and Ranger are all UFAs.

Reimer, Gardiner, Franson are RFAs.

With an extra 2m coming off the books from Tucker and Army, we'd better hope the cap goes up significantly after this season.

I would also venture that Bolland won't be kept after this season. Kuli may also decide to go elsewhere too. Perhaps that'll give an opportunity for younger players to break into the full-time roster, which isn't exactly a bad thing.

I doubt that the goaltending situation is resolved this year, and that we end up hanging onto both for next season.

Dion gets 6.5 this year. He simply isn't worth 6.5. He's worth a little over 5, yet his ego won't allow him to take a paycut. I wouldn't mind letting him walk at the end of the season if we see enough good things from the other defensemen. We should have enough offence from the back end and good enough goaltending to survive without Dion, but we'll have to wait and see of course.

Don't we retain a part of his salary if he's claimed on waivers?

Nice deal to sign Franson, but what's with this notion that the Leafs absolutely could not survive the season without Franson in the line up? Suddenly JML is a fossil that requires a walker to get around? I wish some people would look at the "body of work" rather that 1 season, or half of a season.

As for clearing cap space move Liles with Colborne for a 2nd or a 3rd to one of the 5 teams with cap space.

Main takeaway from my comment: While it'd be nice to get something for him... if they can't, waivers offer a way out of the problem.
- Feeling Glucky?

The Leafs need every buck right now and waiving Liles (if he can't be traded) saves more than Brennan.

1.25 million is what they have to carry "extras". It wouldn't suprise me if they just carry one extra skater through the first couple of weeks.

Meh, not quite sure moving Colborne's the right idea. I do thinkk we'd need to give up a decent pick into to shed Liles' salary, which frankly must be done.

I'm good with that. Is it just me, or does anyone else find it hard to imagine Kessel in his mid to late 30's. Nothing to do with his next contract, I just try to imagine Kessel beyond that. Will he look like a tubby Al Iafrate by then - an uglier version?

nope. Used to be that if you recalled a guy and he got claimed, you'd keep half his salary... but now there are no recalls, and any team that claims him is on the hook for the whole thing.

Demoting Smith and Holzer leaves them at +333K and theres no chance they demote Liles...

Figure if you remove some of the bonuses that Capgeek counts (Gardiner -200k) that just brings them around $5-600k

Leafs have $30M going into next year.

Phaneuf eats up around 6
Kessel eats up around 7.5
Franson eats up arond 3.5

Leaving $13M for Bolland, Kulemin, McLement, Raymond, Colborne, Fraser, Gardiner, Ranger, Reimer

Uh yeah...thats going to be tricky.
