having 3 mediocre players or two top level players for a million less.
hmmm...
Also, predicting who's going to be a UFA from this point in time is pretty useless. - Feeling Glucky?
I don't think there are too many people that would consider Callahan and Girardi as 'mediocre'..

so you say there's a chance? - Garnie
that colborne makes it to the AHL?
no, not much of one. he's an on the cusp young centre with size... if he can be had for nothing, someone is gonna grab him |

If that's from capgeek, then it's just them projecting our roster. Leafs are still sitting with 18 forwards, 10 defensemen and 3 goalies as of now. We'll see how things shake up over the weekend but expect...
Trevor Smith, Troy Bodie, T.J Brennan, Korbinian Holzer and Drew MacIntyre on waivers, with the potential of J.M Liles if we decide to keep Rielly
Leivo, Devane, Broll assigned to Marlies and perhaps Rielly assigned to Moose Jaw.
Could see a 4th line of Ashton Colborne and Orr. Move McClement onto the 3rd line with Bolland and Kulemin, Raymond to Clarkson's spot while he's suspended. - t_leafs21
Some twitter rumours suggesting Ashton + Liles the rumoured package to move JML |

There's an article in the Globe today (or yesterday) which talks about how the Leafs can get a bit of cap relief by only carrying a minimum of players, and calling up guys on an "emergency" basis. |

Morning, fruitcups.
Let me axe you a question: does anyone know of a good website I can send around to parents of Novice girls that explains simple hockey rules like offsides and icing?
I'm looking for a Peter Puck for the cyberage resource.
Thanks. - Atomic Wedgie
why not use peter puck himself?

I was at the game on Sunday, and I was watching Colborne, as I had previously posted here that the Leafs need to give him a chance (6'5" centres don't come along too often). But wow did he not impress.
Having said that, I'm guessing he makes the team, for no other reason than his low salary.
How the eff did the Leafs get into salary cap hell so quickly?
And if Nonis ends up sending Liles to the Marlies, it constitutes an epic salary cap mananagement failure on his part. |

Not to mention, older. |

seriously, once you get Liles off roster(even if it's through waivers)... we're not really in trouble. |

I was hoping for something a little more succinct - the kids these days have no attention spans.
Mrs. Atomic Wedgie was coaching softball this year, and somebody sent her a powerpoint presentation which outlined basic strategies (where to throw the ball when it is hit, depending on base runners, etc.) that was perfect.
Just hoping to find something similar. |

I'd definitely prefer Girardi over Phaneuf (considering the rest of Tor D especially)
Agree that Kessel is a better player (at least taking into consideration just points) but qualifying Callahan as a 'mediocre' player is quite harsh |

Sorry I worded that weirdly. I mean Gunnarsson is the safe non-flashy player. |

can't agree with that at all. If Liles isn't in the top 6... and he may very well not be, why wouldn't they send him down to get the $950k relief?

we can probably swing 2 and a second rounder if we pony up phil kessel |

Question related to next season and UFAs:
Will Nonis be more interested in resigning Captain Phaneuf and Kessel (combined 14-15million cap hit) or go for the alternative of:
Orpik (4)+ Girardi (5.5) + Callahan (6.5) UFA Signings.. (16m combined)
Personally I would very much prefer the 2nd scenario.. - MaximusAurelius

Because they could have used a compliance buyout on him, and either bought out Komisarek the old fashioned way, or sent him to the Marlies.
Either way, there would have been a much smaller impact on the Leafs' salary cap - this year and moving forward.
And I was going to type that I don't have a problem with sending Liles down, but after a bit of reflection, I realized it's a bad idea. The guy has 3 years left on his contract. You can't end his career, or he'll end up being a giant cap penalty for another three years.
Basically, you have to play him and hope he gets better, or trade him and eat some salary.

guys who make over $5 million need to do more than play physical to be a fan favourite, especially in places like Toronto and Montreal. - scotch_tape
If Clarkson scores at the same pace his has in 4 of his last 5 seasons, and is physical, everybody will love him.
And the one low season was after a summer of Zero training due to rehabbing a broken leg. Not concerned about his production at all.

Callahan is a warrior and definitely a playoff-time performer. If we lose Kulemin we should pick up Callahan |

Really! Leafs finally have a top 10 scorer in back to back years. Who was last Leaf to do that? Sundin? Dougie? and we want to get rid of him
Also lets get rid of the best Leaf D-Man since Salming.
Great idea... for the rest of the division |

And if Franson hadn't signed?
Liles can still play top 4 on this team (without Franson). Komi couldn't. D would be a bit scary without him.
Liles can also be traded. Look at the other "untradeable" players Leafs have traded the last couple years. It can be done, just going to take the right situation. |
