what if he doesn't join the fight?
- Big_Lightnin

so the grey area you're referring to is a situation in which there is a brawl on the ice and a player jumps off the bench just to see if his edges are still sharp?

then he just wasted his 10 game suspension

yup, if you're gonna hop off the bench at least get your money's worth.

Well lets have a look.
He's a top 4 dman on 90% of the teams in the league.
The Leafs D are not that great right now.
The Leafs do not have a player that can replace everything Franson brings to the table. (please dont even suggest Rielly...hes just not ready)
You are not going to get much in return only because teams know the leafs are in a bind.

Hence...it would be dumb to trade him

Wasn't on the Leafs last year

alright my bad.

and again, I know this looks like I'm whining cause Clarkson got suspended... but as I said earlier, I'm not a fan of mandatory suspension amounts for anything, because every situation is different.

just having the discussion.

My first reaction was 10 game suspension for Clarkson is better than Kessel out 2 months with a concussion. Wish he hadn't done it, but didn't mind it that much when it happened.

- Big_Lightnin

but it seems like you're focused on the application of the rule, not the reason for it.

its probably the most clear cut black and white dont do this rule the NHL has and we want to go and throw it on the pile of WTF rules and suspensions

precisely

was thinking more if say a Sabre also left the bench when he saw Clarkson go, grabbed Clarkson but then no fight... just held each other back (not that that would have happened).

Both automatically get the 10 games I would assume, but would be poopty for the Sabre.

but again... just seemed like an appropriate platform to discuss the mandatory aspect of the # of games. we did that. I'm not committed to it.

I don't think he'sa top 4D. Maybe he can be, but I've yet to see
Leafs D aren't that great, agreed, but without Franson, they aren't much worse. All he brings is offense. We have enough of that coming out the ass. Liles can take his place and would only lose a handful of points provided Franson can actually replicate what he did last year.
No Rielly.
The return thing is the only one that troubles me. But its not like we'd get (frank)-all for Liles either.

all kessel would have to do is skate away.. or hey.... he could always turtle immediately

why is this particular option not being considered?

ya, but Sabre was more justified in leaving the bench because team was outmanned.

But then if they were given different suspension lengths it would get appealed... so probably has to be same anyway.

1: not off the draw

2: moore didnt know it was coming, kessel did.

3: dont even try to sell me on the fact that this example is typical

maybe kessel should of just manned the (frank) up and taken a couple of shots.. he's 6 foot 200lbs.. he isnt exactly little.

the worst guy in this whole (frank)ing thing is kessel with that stick work of his. (frank)in maggoty move. i have lost a ton of respect for him.

all he had to do was throw the one wack at his feet and then nothing...stand there. Scott was mobbed by then.

after what happend to Moore...I would not recommend turning your back to an unpredictable monster

I still think Clarkson jumped on because initially two players go after Kessel but one breaks off. He probably thought Kessel was about to get jumped by two guys.

who cares why he did it?

its flat out against the rules.

so he gets 10 games. if the suspension was worth it to him and the team then fine. but the moment he jumped over and grabbed someone he was suspended.

No. Absolutely not.

A guy Scott's size great really do a lot of damage to an unexperienced fighter. A doughy 200 pounds is tiny compared to a built 270.
