Because he is a good player and just starting to hit form and not likely to get value back.

Not so sure about not getting value back.
He's not a bad player, but I don't think we need him long-term.
I wouldn't mind keeping him most of this year but flipping him at the deadline.

If its Ashton or colborne, its Ashton based on this camp

true, but cap might give it to Colborne despite not deserving it.

to be fair... he said could happen soon.

that is not the same as "going to happen today."

If the trade involves Colorado, it will be Liles. They are short-handed and thin on D with the injury to R. Wilson and both Roy and Sakic know Liles from his previous stint with the Avs. The Leafs will likely take a player back with a lower salary who they can bury in the minors with less of a cap hit the almost $3 Million still on the books if they buried Liles.

Colborne could be Edmonton bound, with RNH and Gagner out, they need a healthy body at C and Dallas Eakins knows Colborne from the Marlies.

I still believe the Leafs are not trading Franson.

do we know what the injury to Bolland is?
Any reason to think LTIR? Cause that would solve the immediate cap crunch since he could be replaced for only a fraction of his salary.

Otherwise... getting under the cap for opening night is gonna be interesting

EDIT: There is also no way they can keep Rielly for any reg season games as it stands now.

I find this funny:
Clarkson gets 10 games for coming off the bench to help out a teammate
Kessel gets 3 PRE-season games (so essentially nothing) for swinging his stick like a weapon multiple times

not arguing against the Clarkson suspension; the rule is clear, I just find the whole situation to be a little

Rule needs to be looked at.

Obviously, there's a reason for it, but Clarkson didn't even fight - never threw a single punch (that I could see anyway).

Should be some discretion there... I'm never a fan of mandatory suspensions because every situation is different.

on of Liles or Franson will be traded before Oct 1st.

Have too. Otherwise they can't sign Franson at all.

If anybody other than Clarkson and Orr need replacing for opening night, I don't know if they can even ice a full team

- Big_Lightnin

It's not entirely unlikely that they wait 8-10 games to move Liles. By then teams will have a better sense of what they need, and injuries could open up salary space and roster spots too. Calgary, Florida or Colorado seem to be a logical places for him to land considering they all need D and have lots of cap space. Liles for a 2nd or 3rd and then sign Franson.

not really. the reason for the penalty isn't for Clarkson to become involved or not in a fight it's to prevent someone from the other bench seeing him and jumping off the bench too, then another, then another.

it's a suspension for coming off the bench not for coming off the bench and punching someone.

I agree - Clarkson didn't injure anyone, or do anything more than he would have if he had been on the ice the whole time. 2-3 games for someone hopping the bench just to fight seems reasonable. If a player hops the bench and deliberately attacks or injures someone it should be 10 games.

It's just funny that Kessel can 2-hand slash Scott twice and then spear him afterwards and only get 3 preseason games, yet Clarkson comes off the bench and protects his teammate by holding Scott back and he gets 10 regular season games.....the system is broken and needs fixing badly

the way it's worded suggests otherwise... and wording is everything in contracts.
