I don't like the message that would send to Sieloff, Wotherspoon, Ramage, Kanzig, etc. If Flames are rebuilding and have said the youth will have a shot, you don't then go out and bring in a vet d-man.
We all agree Smith and Butler should be waved, and that is so we can see Flames prospects play, not to fill the void with vets. - FL4MES
What if he youth don't take advantage of the opportunity? The message might simply be "you're not ready yet"
The kids will get their shot with call ups. Their play at that time will determine if they stay up. Same as with what happened with Brodie. |

Wrong starting line-up mate, but whatever. I'll kick your ass at COD later regardless. - AdamFrench

Let's not bring in someone new based on a what-if. Give Flames prospects a shot at the beginning of the season, then start looking for trades if they don't pan out. |

Hartley says Backlund is on the wing just to test out the other guys and still have him in the lineup, nothing more than that. - Colin Dambrauskas
I agree with you. I'm just glad they're giving Monahan a shot with a couple better players. |

Update to blog:
The Calgary Flames have assigned six players to the Abbotsford Heat of the AHL as they continue to skim down their own roster; Chad Billins, John Ramage, Tyler Wotherspoon, Steve Begin, Markus Granlund and Josh Jooris.
The most recent cuts brings the Flames down to 32 players who remain on their roster, and they will be looking to cut another 8-10 shortly. |

Nothing too surprising there. All guys who are starting their pro carrer's basically (exception of Billins and Begin).
Can all be easily called up, and will get more ice time in the AHL.
Kanzig won't be staying on the team, they may just want to get a better look before sending him back to his Junior team.
I was really hoping Knight would make this team, but I think he will be in the AHL by this time tomorrow.
My guess is Monahan and Bouma will be the guys starting the season.
Sieloff has a chance, if they are able to waive/trade Smith and or Butler. |

Berra honestly looks better than McDonald does. We should trade McDonald for what ever w can get and go with Ramo and Berra for the Flames. I don't want three guys in Abbotsford. It won't be good for their development. |

Btw...from the poll I put up yesterday, over 1000 people felt that the Flames should grab Liles...Im sure many were Leafs fans but still...are you guys still that much against it if it means grabbing a prospect too? What about a guy like Percy for instance?
D Smith for Liles and Percy. - Colin Dambrauskas
Why do they Leafs any favours? I would rather use the cap space & some of our periphery decent prospects to get some real quality RFA's. I would rather give Toronto Horak & a 2nd for Franson. Then resign Franson to a contract the Leafs should be doing but cant. Screw them, the owe us anyway. |

Agree, I'm still pissed at Feaster for resigning Joey Macbackup, he knew Ramo & Berra were coming & he knew it would be important to start Ortio & Brossoit down in Abby to kick start their pro careers. Just a stupid signing. |

Ramo and Berra were both completely unproven in the NHL though... they still are to be honest. Feaster saw what happened with Karlsson and made sure that we'd have an abundance of options. I don't blame him at all for that. |

Ill second this...better to have a few extra eggs in the basket than not enough. Figure out which of the three currently at NHL level can play, move the last. Even if you dump Mac or Berra for pick/prospect, still works out given how both were acquired. |

Too late now...Franson signed for 1yr 2M....they will certainly be looking to trade Liles now given the amount of defenders they have and lack of cap space....300k remaining by my count. |

Well I don't necessarily agree that Ramo & Berra should be put in the same category as Karlsson. Berra did pretty well at the worlds & Ramo was pretty established in the KHL. There are several Macdonalds unsigned out there & getting a replacement level goalie isn't that difficult. Also, who cares, we're rebuilding & our chances of playoffs this year is less than 1.0%. Flames are actually going to be fairly decent coming out of the gate but once we start losing the thin layer of vets to injury as the year progresses, well it'll be the harsh cold reality Oilers have been living in. Now's the time to find out what we have at the NHL level while our home grown, drafted goalies get tenderized & slow baked down in Abby. Now's the time to start rolling the dice with these "unknowns" |

Has the NHL actually grown up? Cant believe no one stepped up & put a 4 year 3.3mill OS on him. Personally, I don't think Colbourne is enough to give Toronto cap freedom. We paid huge to get rid of Kotalik, an underwhelming return on Regehr & a 2nd. The price must be higher, just from the standpoint that Liles slows down our rebuild for the next 3 years taking the spot of Ramage, Cundari or Whetherspoon. I know we can buy him out, pretty sure Edwards may not be thrilled if we just get a disappointing Colbourne prospect that Leaf fans would be thrilled to part with to get rid of Liles. From a GM point of view, if Colbourne didn't pan out while absorbing a crap contract, that could be a career killer. I would then put a guy like Horak in the deal & ask for Liles & their 1st rounder. Solves their cap & it gives them a decent player to fill in for the Clarkson suspension. |
