Kostka impressed me last year with Toronto and again this pre-season. Looks like he was encouraged to join the rush a lot. Really like what he brings.

Except Toronto needs D especially on the right side and they let him go. Makes me wonder.

It's actually BROOKSTANK
- philco28

Phil. trust me. Brookbanks in an All-Star compared to Fox. He was freaking terrible. Bob Murray lost about 5 years off his career playing with him.

For sure...Leafs have been known to let guys leave and then watch them go on to solid careers. Kostka's probably a bottom pair guy but i'll take anything that can lumber up to the podium under its own power over Brookbank right now.

Is it for certain that Hossa will not be ready to start the season? It seems that that's been a blanket assumption here, and I haven't read/heard anything about it.

Earlier in camp Q said Hossa will be ready for the start of the season. But given Hossa's health history it's seasonable to question this. I haven't heard anything specific over the past week or so, so who really knows.

Sassone says (I know, I'm just an old name dropper) - Hossa likely to skate tomorrow but that doesn't mean practice.

Q earlier had said Hossa would likely be ready for the last pre-season game - so he may be on schedule.

Hayes, Nordstrom and Kostka looking to be the three spots.

Minus Morin adds about $2.1MM to cap, leaving about $1MM in space. Gives them room to call up any remaining player from Rockford, as all but Raanta and McNeil make under $1MM.

Okay, so given the assumption that Hossa is healthy to begin the season, and the team carries 8 d-men, what does the roster look like on Tuesday?

I'll list the lineup in line/pairing format, despite the fact that over 50% of posters here hate line prognostications. This isn't really that, but more a roster prognostication

Here goes...

52-16-42/28

8th D man allows for Rozi to be platooned as well. He needs to be healthy for the playoffs.

True, but only the 23 players on the active roster count against the cap. If there were to be a call-up, somebody would have to be moved from the roster - giving additional cap space. So, they would more than likely be able to call any of their prospects up.

I agree with this, although it appears that Hayes may be on the 3rd line instead of Morin.

Given what we've seen from both players in the pre-season, that doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense. Perhaps practices have shown otherwise.

In my mind, if Hayes isn't going to be a consistent physical presence, he's not worth the spot. Rather have the kid with some (but fewer) skating deficiencies and a rocket shot who goes hard to the net.

But you could platoon Rozi with only 7: no one else on defense particularly needs periodic platooning.

8 defensemen means only 13 forwards - and that's where you need platooning: Handzus, Hossa....

I'm pretty sure Hayes makes it along with Smith and Morin. I think Nordstrom is the odd man out. Nordstrom starting out in Rockford and being among the first recalled is going to benefit him in the long run.

FORWARDS
Bryan Bickell ($4.000m) / Jonathan Toews ($6.300m) / Patrick Kane ($6.300m)
Patrick Sharp ($5.900m) / Michal Handzus ($1.000m) / Marian Hossa ($5.275m)
Brandon Saad ($0.894m) / Andrew Shaw ($0.578m) / Ben Smith ($0.563m)
Jeremy Morin ($0.887m) / Marcus Kruger ($1.325m) / Jimmy Hayes ($0.875m)
Brandon Bollig ($0.575m) /
DEFENSEMEN

thought winchester & peckham were picked up to offset the bullsh it, especially winchester who could definetly play.
- wonthecup10

It is a bit of smoke and mirrors with a slot or two on many teams roster cuts at the end.

Wings may send two guys who will be in the league all year and back very quickly DeKeyser and Nyqvist, because they are not susceptible to being taken by another team by nature of their yrars as pros...they want to make sure they don't lose Tomas Tatar.

The Hawks may also have final cuts that they plan on bring right back after the players are passed in the waiver process....

I see st. louis has issues also with space , interesting to see if Ryan Reeves becomes available. wouldn't mind seeing him & Bollig together on the same line to keep guys honest out there.

Agreed. Morin is nasty grinder when he needs to be and has great hands. Sure his skating isn't that great but he has better hockey IQ than Hayes, who isn't great Skater either but owns more top end speed.

How? If I'm not mistaken the Hawks have said they will carry 8 defensemen to start the season. 8 d-men + 2 goaltenders leaves 13 available forward spots, 14 if Hossa is on IR to start the season.

Not if you need to play him less than forty games and you want space to test other young guys in the role. I think that bottom pairing is going to be a revolving door.
