Agreed...and here's my last thought of the day....
Put Piri at 2C for no less then 15 games. This team isnt' going to be dead in the water after 15 games. Lets see what he can/can't do. The whole world knows what Handzus does. Lets see if Piri knowing it's not a game by game situation, can produce anything....I'm not a Piri lover, but it's time to see what this guy can do.
This team won a cup with Handzus at 2c, and no PP in the playoffs. Can't roll that dice again, and expect to come up 7-11. - SteveRain
Pirri will definitely be in the mix early...hope he makes the most of it.

Kuc says:
Lines at today's practice include Pirri, Morin, Nordstrom (not on the same line).
Also: Hawks put Mayers' name on the Cup, and Carcillo's. Good / Classy moves both. - StLBravesFan
Good on them and very much deserved. I thought Brookbank would be in that extra category as well, but I didn't realise he played a game in the playoffs. |

At the very least, Pirri will be on the short list for a call-up if/when injuries do happen. |

Heard an interview with him during one of the pre-season games. He sounds FOCUSED and said being around the team during the Cup run showed him what he needed to do to hopefully MAKE IT.

Line rushes today have been Bickell-Toews-Kane, Sharp-Handzus-Morin, Saad-Kruger-Shaw, Bollig-Pirri-Nordstrom. - Beaver-Warrior
Did Pirri play any #2C in the pre-season games? Zus is gonna have limited gas in the tank and his minutes need to be kept low. Why not let Pirri roll at #2C now?? I hope Q just lets Pirri play in that #2 spot to see what he has. |

Pirri is fighting to do that, but the injury he had early in the preseason definitely diminished his chances. Also, it is suspected that Q isn't really high on Pirri or trusts him. That doesn't help Pirri's chances either. |

I will say this again. It seems to go right by the heads of most as I say it over and over, but here is the key. Stop thinking in terms of 1st line, 3rd line etc...think along the lines of building 4 balanced lines.
That is the secret formula. Again I reference Team USA world Junior championship and again will cite last years Hawks team. Swarm and overwhelm all opponents who have less speed and skill and grit on all their lines. Put the onus on the opposition to attempt to out play you at your game, when in reality they are over matched.
Having Speed, Skill, Grit, and two way play on all lines is the formula. So from my point of view, it is irrelevant and a waste of time to focus on 2nd line, 4th line. In reality, last year the Hawks had 2 third lines, and in reality you could have called the Shaw, Bick and STal line as a second line on most teams.
Balance Balance Balance. I would not be surprised to see Pirri and Handzuis rotated and or Shaw centering 3rd line and Kruger 4th.
Just my 2 cents, but guys have to think outside the box a bit. |

Balance, yes, but:
Even on this team, you have your top two lines being scoring lines - presumably populated with all 20+ goal scorers (most 30+), and your bottom two lines with no one who has YET scored 20 goals (I think).
It's important to have someone qualified between Hossa and Sharp (or Hossa and Kane, or however it winds up) so that they can continue to be 30+ scorers: last year, after the TDL, it wound up being mostly Handzus; this year, it will likely be Handzus a good part of the time.
Balance is great, needed, was a big factor in winning the Cup - as was the fact that they could expect about 2 goals per game from the top 6. |

I can't help but wonder. Anyone can see the impending health issues Hossa was having or going to have back in June. Why did they not save one of their two buyouts for him? |

No, and it's because of the health issues that you wouldn't. Hossa can go on the LTIR if needed just like Philly did with Pronger.
Besides, he's too good to get rid of even factoring in his limited health. |

Yes I get that... but you need a C to keep up with the scoring studs on that line. The biggest point is that Zus is up there in age and has little gas in the tank. Thats all. Also fish or cut bait with Pirri. And I asked if Pirri got any time with the 2nd line for a reason. C a line with Bollig or whatever rookie is way different then C a line with Hossa and Sharp Grit. Im all for balance but if you dont have a C that can get good looks to Hossa and Sharp you waste that line. Dont make me throw the Dan Cleary thing at you again.. |

No surprise. The beat writers out there have been tweeting that Q has been dropping hints like this for a few days now. There's some speculation that Kostka would have to be put on waivers, and the organization is afraid that he wouldn't make it through waivers. |

Hossa skated this morning prior to practice. Q hoping he practice tomorrow; he'll skate either way. |

My guess is that they don't want to risk losing Kostka on waivers. - DarthKane
Or are they looking at moving Brookbank? Makes no sense to keep 8 defencemen and eat up cap space we may need at the trade deadline. |

If Q dresses 8 defenseman for a game, the Hawks are (frank)ed.
Normally a team will dress 6 defenseman, maybe 7 if you intend on playing that extra d-man on the 4th line. |

6, unless the 7th also plays some time on the wing. |
