Isn't there a rule about starting a fight before the drop of the puck on a faceoff? That's what I was referring to.
As far as the rest of it. That's it in a nutshell. Now if one of Toronto's tougher players such as Clarkson or Colton Orr was running Cody Hodgson or one of the other non combatants on Buffalo. Then Scott's actions would've been the correct response. - MJL
There is a rule about that, it's an automatic game misconduct.
I'd like to see guys like Scott, Orr and McLaren out of the NHL. Somebody on twitter just suggested having some sort of punishment tied to guys with under 8 minutes of ice time fighting, which would either force the goons out of the league or force the coaches to play them for a regular shift.
Not 100% sure how that'd work, but it's something to look at. |

Not exactly sure how that is Carlyle's fault. Tropp was more than willing to fight with Devane on the previous shift. There was no reason for Scott to go after anyone. Had Tropp been jumped by Devane, sure, I could see a coach not putting a star player out for the next shift. But Tropp willingly fought and lost.
If that's the case, why wouldn't every team load up on goons to keep the other team's star players off the ice? - Jsaquella
Well, it's John Scott. He's a goon who was on the ice down in the gamel, after one of his teammates got handily beaten in a fight. Sure, there was no reason for him to go after anyone, especially Kessel. Apparently, the Sabres were ticked that Tropp was bloodied, but like you said he willingly fought. Still, no excuse for Scott. But if I'm Carlyle, up a goal in a preseason game and I see John Scott on the ice, why am I putting out my best player? He said it was to defuse the situation, thinking no one would go after Kessel, so why not send out Clarkson (who ended up on the ice anyway)?

Well, if I'm trying to defuse things, I'm going to send out a guy who doesn't fight(Kessel had exactly one fight before the shenanigans) rather than Clarkson, who does fight willingly on a regular basis.
If coaches have to worry about playing their stars because the other team sends out a goon, that's not a league I want to watch.

I would not be in favor of that. For the simple reason that it doesn't single out the enforcers. A player who is a 4th line role player, could have his icetime reduced due to the situation of the game. If he gets into a spontaneous fight, not a staged fight. He would be subjected to that.

Have to agree there. Hell just play your goon 20 minutes a game!

I think Scott was already out there and was kept on. at least that's what i'm seeing. - wilsonecho91
There was a faceoff when Scott lined up next to Kessel. Teams changed after the initial fight. If he was already out, then he could've pulled him off. Doesn't really change anything.

I wouldn't have given him the 3 if he hadn't gone back for another chop. Someone's chasing you, you slash him you get two minutes... 7 if it's a chop like that to the shin pad maybe. It's not like he swung at his head or even the back of his leg.
Not sure which side of ridiculous you're falling. |

I agree with that. Though Clarkson isn't paid like a fighter he's definitely more than willing to fight and sending him out there would be like saying "if you want a fight, here you go."
And playing your star players against goons like Scott is a match-up I'd take every game, in the regular season. My point is that it was a meaningless preseason game and Kessel didn't necessarily have to be on the ice at that point in the game. I can understand the logic behind having him there, it's just not something I would do. I'm not all that familiar with the Leafs lineup that game, but I'm sure there was someone who could've taken Kessel's place.

For the last slash, when Scott was already engaged with two other players, is what Kessel should have gotten suspended for. And it shouldn't have been for meaningless pre-season games. |

My point is that there was zero reason for Scott to fight anyone who lined up at that spot across from him.
Tropp willingly fought and got hurt. I can see if Tropp had been hurt in a cheap shot or something similar, but he willingly engaged in the fight. It's the same dumb poop that we see when guys go after other players after a big, legal hit.
To me, that poop is stupid. It's a physical game. Guys shouldn't have to drop their gloves everytime they hit somebody legally. |
