It's getting late. He's still got some tread on the tire. I think majority of Flyers fans would prefer to have Gagne on the third line right now as opposed to an unknown entity.
- PLindbergh31

Not sure about the majority. Also not sure we should do it even if the majority wants it. When talking Flyers fans, the majority probably has a collective IQ of around 12 (so we are all clearly in the minority, obvs).

Personally, I like Talbot on the third line wing slot. I think he's perfect for it, but if either Raffl or VDV beat him out so much the better. It will mean they truly deserve it. At this point in their respective careers, and given what that line needs, I'd rather have Talbot on it than Gagne. Especially since Talbot is already on the team and will not add to our cap/contracts the way Gagne would.

I'd rather have the unknown entity, at least at the start of the season.

The injuries concern me, and honestly he doesn't bring anything to the table that they can't add at the trade deadline for a modest cost. Let a kid play and see if he can do a good job.

Raffl is a 24 year old rookie that had multiple suitors. Matt Read was a 24 year old rookie that had numerous suitors. Perhaps VandeVeld can step in and do a serviceable job. Worst case scenario is that Talbot plays on the third line and they end up using Raffl, VandeVeld or Laughton on the 4th line.

*please note there was zero mention of the salary cap in this post.

VandeVelde is a true unknown to me. Hadn't heard his name at all before preseason, and now he's a guy with a legitimate shot at an NHL spot.

I had heard of him before, but considered him to be an AHL guy at best. Glad he's playing well enough to make a strong push to make the team. Who knows, maybe he gets first crack, because Raffl & Laughton are waiver exempt and he isn't.

You bested me. I can honestly that I never heard of him.

I had to read up to find out he had a cup of coffee with the Oil last year and played with Hextall's kid at UND.

I agree totally. And I'm not really sure why the Flyers don't view Talbot as a fit for the 3rd line .

Detroit trading Ville Leino for a half crippled Ole Kristian Tollefsen.

The Flyers are far from the lone team that has made cap mistakes. Pointing out the Flyers errors isn't necessarily calling them inept. It's just mentioning that they've made some mistakes

- Jsaquella

Also trading Umberger - that has to be a cap casualty.

I think it's cause putting Talbot on the 4th line is what gives us one of the best 4th lines in the league.

Taking a break from work, and not back reading. Is this still "cap-hell", "trade a defenseman", and "the Pens are going to sign Bryz" talk?

I think you can add "Chris VandeVelde" to that list.

Very fair. Gagne would certainly be no lock to stay healthy, that's for sure. Raffl put up some solid numbers in Sweden, wasn't the SEL, but a notch below. Hopefully he pans out. If he can be a 10-15 goal scorer, and be a solid two way player that would suffice. Not sure if those are realistic hopes for him.

Talbot can certainly handle a third line role. He's very underrated in all aspects. I'm not opposed to giving Raffl a chance.

I think 10 to 12 is realistic, as long as Coots picks up his offense this season.

Playing with Read and Raffl/Talbot should help that compared to him playing with Rosehill/Hall last season.

The Phillies.
In 2008 when they were celebrating total victory, if you had told me that in 5 years time this team would be stripped down, old, and pathetic, I would've laughed at you. We've gone downhill pretty fast.

Wonderful. Right arm fatigue is what's being said. A Hall of Fame pitcher's career may be over.

they have so much $$ tied up in older players and that doesn't give them salary flexibility or leverage they need and...oh, boy...
