Bernier and Clarkson making a point of sticking up for thier teamates is something i think will help the team. 2 new players who now are on my Fav list after that.

Leafs will be fine...thanks for the concern though.

Clarksons actions did literally nothing to help the situation.

Come playoff it me you'll be singing a different tune. Those 10 games will matter and they could matter a lot.

No amount of artificial bravado or team comradery is going to make that pill easier to swallow.

It will hurt the team, but not likely their playoff chances. Who knows. I think something like this will bring the team closer together, despite losing a key player on the team. You're right, this didn't have to happen, but an unexpected move like Scott trying to fight Kessel shouldn't have happened either and as a veteran leader on this team trying to earn respect, Clarkson just reacted. Yea it wasn't the wisest choice, but he did it for the sake of a star player, not a selfish reason so I can forgive him and respect him for an error of judgement.

If the Leafs plan on being a playoff team, they're going to have to learn how to play games without key pieces. If the Leafs miss the playoffs by two points, it won't be a single players fault, it will be a collective failure with blame being spread around.

Bingo, this has zero effect on the regular season. Which makes this, all the more idiotic.

The day the trade was made he earned the opening night assignment.
- faceto27

Really? He had actually played less games than Reimer and their numbers are actually very similar

Reimer:
NHL TOTALS 104 53 32 0 14 10 263 3,103 .915 2.71 5,816

Bernier
NHL TOTALS 62 29 20 0 6 6 136 1,553 .912 2.36 3,460

The only spot where Bernier seems to have a real edge is in goals against average, but that can also have a lot to do with the team in front of you. Reimers save percentage isn't that much worse, but he's also played 42 games more.

Their shutout percentage is actually almost exactly the same as well. I don't think it was automatic that Bernier would be the starter. He might have more upside sure, but the numbers to date don't favour him. In fact, I would say Reimer's numbers are better when you consider how much of a mess the Leafs have been.

Considering i have been jumped like that, I can say with absolute confidence that no, I would not be flailing my stick around like some medieval knight.

All he had to do was skate away. It didn't appear as if Scott was very determined, and the whole Toronto team was on him in a second.

There is literally no reason Kessel needed to be using his stick as a weapon.

- Putzfrau

I seen what Scott did to Westgarth in LA. I would beat him with a stick too!!

i don't recall it ever being overturned...
however here is the rule right out of the nhl rulebook
"70.10Fines and Suspensions – The first player to leave the players’ or
penalty bench illegally during an altercation or for the purpose of
starting an altercation
from either or both teams shall be suspended
automatically without pay for the next ten (10) regular League and/or
Play-off games of his team."

Clarkson can argue that he wasn't trying to start an altercation, and he was trying to prevent it, because he never threw a punch nor did he try to.
so..... there is a slim chance he wont get the full 10

- Rockhead_37

I think it's automatic....

Eric Godard left the bench during the brawl in Long Island when Mike Haley was fighting Brent Johnson.... He could have argued he was breaking up the fight and not initiating... but he still got the 10. Clarkson is gone.. no doubt about it IMO.

Maybe the most bizarre part is how, in 24 hours, we went from a laugh-filled, 15-round joke shootout in Buffalo to a line brawl in Toronto.

What's your agenda here?

You have no idea what something like this may do to a teams mental approach and unity. The whole situation was a mind(frank) of events, and Clarkson just reacted.

I said it before and I will say it again. If the Leafs miss the playoffs, a single player wont be the cause of it. It will be a team failure. You're acting like Clarkson is our best forward and we just lost Crosby. Clarkson is about the 5th best forward we have. Something that can, and should, be over come as a team.

As a leader and defender on this team, he made a stand and proved his committment to the team. Yea, it was a mistake, but he reacted to a situation that was completely unexpected.

If this was a selfish move, I would be inclined to agree with you. It wasn't, there for im sure his team will respect him a lot more now that he stuck up for them the instant the star of the team was threatened. If you truly think the team will think nothing of this and shrug it off, or worse, blame Clarkson for hurting their playoff chances, you're sadly mistaken.

correct me if I'm wrong, but Godard did end up in a fight after he left the bench?

Or it could backfire on the Sabres.

With Clarkson gone for 10 games, we may miss the playoffs. Which means we end up in the lottery. And if we win the lottery then the Sabres get (frank)ed again.

It could have, if Scott got a hold of Kessel and seriously hurt him. Which he easily could do if not for the team sticking up for him. You're just trolling now and seem very bitter about something, for whatever reason.

You have no way of knowing how his actions will affect the team, dont pretend you do

Those 10 games seem to matter a lot to the other teams fans who now want to flock to the leafs thread to tell us how important he is to the team. Before last night it was a terrible signing by the leafs.

That said..I predicted the leafs would miss the playoffs anyways...

I don't usually rag on bloggers, but Garth needs to proofread what he writes. Spelling errors in words he used all caps for "ITIMIDATE" you should porbably spell the word right if you're drawing attention to it.

And he called Kessel a 40 goal scorer, which he isn't. He's never hit 40...I'd love him to, and the compliment is appreciated, but it takes away from the blog's validity if some "facts" are wrong.

i'm not sure about that.... but also in rule 70.10 is the following.

"The Coach(es) of the team(s) whose player(s) left the players’
bench(es) or penalty bench(es) illegally during an altercation shall be
suspended, pending a review by the Commissioner. The Coach(es)
also will be fined a maximum of ten thousand dollars ($10,000)."

So Carlyle looks like he gets a meeting with Shanny as well.
